During World War II,Oakland Park served as a bombing range for the US military forces in South Florida In 1973, plans were made to build an amusement park called "Disney's Hollywood Hills" within city limits but those plans never came to fruition due to opposition from local residents and businesses who felt that such an establishment would compete with their stores and businesses. However, construction began on what would eventually become Disney's Hollywood Studios outside of city limits in 1995 In 2007, it was announced that Disneyland would be moving its corporate headquarters from Anaheim,, California to Orlando,. This led to protests from residents of Oakland Park who felt that this move would impact their community negatively.. In March 2009 , Mayor James Buchanan Oakley announced his intention to rebrand and revive the old name of Oakland Park - "Titusville"
Oakland Park, Florida was founded in 1871 by J.D. Vance as a plantation near Jacksonville, Florida. The area became known for its citrus crops and cattle ranching. After the American Civil War ended, the land reverted to its original owners and the plantation was abandoned. In 1865, A.P. Hill purchased Vance's plantation and began to develop it into a citrus growing town. In 1911, Oakland Park was renamed after General George Custer during World War I in recognition of his role in the conflict. The town grew rapidly due to its location and production of oranges and other fruits.During the 1940s and 1950s, many African Americans worked in local businesses or service industries in Oakland Park while they awaited opportunities for advancement within society or beyond their experience levels within those communities
