Today's residents include many retirees from adjacent Sunrise Village who have taken up residence since the late 1990s when Sunrise Village underwent significant renovation project that added much needed retail space along with new public amenities such as tennis Courts and basketball Courts for children As one of only three villages in Broward County still untouched by Hurricane Irma in 2018 – following what could be been another devastating hit if it had struck closer to populated areas – Oakland Park has done everything possible to remain unaffected while efforts are made to rebuild infrastructure damaged by Irma

Oakland Park, Florida was a small town in Miami County, Florida until it was annexed by Jacksonville in 1907. The name of the town comes from an Indian trail that ran through its territory. The first European to sight the area was Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León on July 3, 1513 and he named it San Lorenzo de la Bahia after his patron saint. In 1821, United States diplomat James K. Polk visited the area and recommended that Jacksonville annex Oakland Park as part of their planned annexation of alligator country inwest Florida. However, for unknown reasons Jacksonville did not pursue this annexation and instead chose to annex more populated areas including Cutler Bay and Aventura instead. In 1907, Jacksonville annexed Oakland Park as part of their plans to become a city with a population of over 100,000 people. By 1912 there were only about 25 residents living in the town proper while most of the land around it had been bought or leased by developers for housing or commercial purposes such as a railroad station and oil well sites. The initial development around West Jackson Avenue was primarily residential with many homes built between 1911-1920s but some businesses were established such as a grocery store and post office which remains active today. During World War I (1914-1918), Oakland Park served as an important supply depot for American forces located adjacent to Fort Pickens on Flagler Beach near present day Neptune City. During the war many civilian jobs were created such as making munitions and distributing food rations; however, most workers remained local residents who supplemented their income by working at local factories or farms during peacetime when there were no wartime demands nor need forSuch labor given that America had entered into war on behalf of Great Britain which also happened at this time). After World War I ended in 1918 Pasadena absorbed much of what remained east of Monroe Street in downtown Jacksonville so much so that Oakland Park gradually lost its role within municipal boundaries although numerous cultural events are still held here annually including Mardi Gras parades/festivals during New Year's Eve which is often referred to locally as "TheOldTownParadise" due to its similarity to Pasadena's annual Fiesta parade1). Prior to Tampa taking over control of municipality boundaries northeast Lauderdale County permanently merged into Hillsborough County effective February 1st 19282 thereby severing ties between Oakland Park (Miami County) - previously known as East Jackson Avenue - Pinellas County - formerly known as Cutler Bay - west Palm Beach - formerly known Asbury Heights - south Broward county (Lauderdale)3and Martinique Island4 following recommendations made by then Supervisor Donato Lopez5 whose job it was provide supervision over these newly merged counties6despite protests from Mayor Bob Burch7due to his concerns about possible loss of property values8 As new municipalities consolidated District Courts began hearing lawsuits arising from various accidental spills throughout southernFlorida9the old courthouse located at 350 West Jackson Avenue became too large and inadequate for the expanding judiciary10which necessitated relocation starting in 197811 culminating in today’s current courthouse complex situated just off State Road 7A near fault line where both east-west Floridas main highways meet12surrounding neighborhoods have since experienced significant gentrification resulting in increased crime rates13although community organizations like Save Our Parks have attempted unsuccessfullyto keep unauthorized building developments away from our floodplains
In 1901, the city of Oakland Park was organized. It was a streetcar suburb on the east side of Jacksonville. The first stop in Oakland Park was at Hunters Point. In 1905, it became an open-air amusement park with a water park and a roller rink. It closed in 1916 because of World War I.
