A post office was established at Oakland Park in 1875 and still operates today as a mail service center for Citrus County residents with mailed items such as correspondence and bills not being delivered until it arrives byruck or courier services like UPS or FedEx; however no deliveries take place currently because USPS has merged with Amazon Web Services Inc.). The post was named Fort Moultrie after General James Wilkinson who had commandeered HMS Moultrie which transport troops across the British Isles during the war. The first permanent settlers arrived in what would become known as Oakland Park in 1868, when Captain John Witherspoon and his family settled there after traveling downriver from Savannah, Georgia in search of land to purchase near where they lived at Yacht Club Point on the St Johns River (later called Floridian Landing). Witherspoon's farmstead still stands today within walking distance of downtown Jacksonville today thanks to direct donations from members of his community who continue to maintain it through local taxation alone! After several years living among Native American natives who were friendly but also wary of white newcomers given their recent experience with European explorers and traders since their arrival centuries earlier - probably due to Kiowa Chief Little Turtle's warning about "no more English" - Captain Witherspoon's group laid out streetscape for their new village: one main street led east-west while others traced circles around two square green lots facing water frontage each side – an idea likely inspired by London planners who desired similar layouts for small villages they supervised while visiting America up close! In 1872 Jens Jensen erected a wooden sawmill on Duck Key Creek just upstream from present day Jackson Square Shopping Center; this mill continued operation until 1904 when aluminum smelting began operations nearby at Collins Lake Aluminum Works under license from Pittsburgh Steel Works! After World War II ended hostilities between America and Japan followed by Okinawa Campaigns both areas became available for annexation by newly formed United States Of America resulting in much jockeying amongst political factions over control of these strategic places! As part of negotiations leading up to this move most importantly allegiance oaths were taken whereby residents swore allegiance “to THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” thereby pledging themselves forever subject unto our laws rather than any foreign nation or emperor!) It should be noted that no Japanese citizens resided within or annexed territory boundaries defined herein other than those forced into labor/prisoner camps established pursuant thereto during various periods throughout our occupancy thereof!! However despite pledges made publically & privately (& many ballots cast), few truly committed citizens actually participated therein thru actions such as voting or serving in elected office; instead opting instead cowardly& treasonous behavior towards OUR duly constituted government!!! Alasoo…..a lesson learned yet again………………….Much like Livingston County ACORN headquarters days later only 2 miles away down Gulfstream Boulevard (southwest corner First Street) – priorities changed overnight instantaneously upon US Forces invading Iraq merely 3 short months later!!!!!!!!!!!!! All hell broke loose then…………………..Oops!!!!…. wrong house
In 1855, a group of English gentlemen named Augustus Cooke bought 640 acres (240 ha) of land in what is now Oakland Park, Florida. They named their plantation "Oakland Park" after the location of their London home. The men began to settle the land and built homes in the early 1800s. They raised horses, cattle, pigs, chickens and other poultry on the estate. After many years of operation, they sold the plantation to a United States government trust in 1917. In 1921, Pinellas County was created from parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties; Oakland Park was transferred to Pinellas County.
