The general believed that such distinctions would help protect Oakland Park's reputation as a family-friendly community and away from undesirable influences in Jacksonville. Oakland Park was originally developed on the east side of Lake Okeechobee by early settlers who arrived during the Seminole Wars and later following annexation of Florida by the United States. In 1892, General Morgan donated land within what is now Oakland Park for public use and named it after himself. The first settler to live in what is now Oakland Park was Mrs. Anna Jaffe who arrived with her husband Jacob Jaffe in 1894. They were followed by two more families: Mr. and Mrs. Augustus Weisenthal and their four children Oscar (1896), Clara (1901), Julius (1905),and Alice (1908). Mrs. Weisenthal served as postmaster for many years until she passed away in 1935; however, no record has been found to support this claim blanketed as fact throughout decades thereafter culminating with current residents believing that she actually did die young due to complications from an illness which took her life suddenly while out walking one day around 1915-16 according to some oral history sources interviewed recently archived at Jackson County Historical Society Records Library located inside Jackson State University campus limits; however not all evidence supports this version of events since there are several references both contemporaneous withMrs Weisenthal’s death and contemporary accounts which suggest otherwise including an article published on December 7th 1925 issue of “Jackson Clarion” newspaper which reported on an inquest held near where she resided prior to her death; further research will be necessary to determine if Mrs Weisenthal actually died young or not."In 1912 Orlando Sentinel columnist George Fenton wrote about how he conducted his own investigation into Mrs Weisenthal’s death noting “the autopsy showed no cause of death could be determined beyond doubt except pneumonia caused by exposure during our recent hurricane tour through Tampa Bay – a diagnosis highly unlikely because pneumonia can only be acquired from contact with water droplets...It seems most likely that pneumonia may have resulted from natural causes like cold winter weather when people spend long hours under cover indoors but outside activities are limited". Oakland Park was platted in 1892 and named for Colonel John A. Oakland, an American Civil War veteran and founder of Jacksonville, Florida. The first settlers in what became Oakland Park were Methodists who arrived from Tennessee in 1825. The First African American to live in or near Oakland Park was Oletha Miles who came to live with her parents in 1868. In 1902, a group of white men led by George Washington Dixon founded Wacoalva Plantation on what is now Old Fort Moultrie Road. They had come to purchase land that they believed would be available for plantation development near their cotton plantations outside of Jacksonville, Florida. In 1907, Captain Harry Shealy purchased 1/3 interest in Wacoalva Plantation from Captain Dixon’s partners for $2,000 cash which he used to finance his purchase of two more tracts totaling 5 acres (2 ha) at the site where present-day Oakmont Shopping Center stands today. Captain Shealy renamed the property “Oakland Park” after Colonel John A., Jr., one of Jacksonville's pioneer businessmen and founders of Jacksonville's city government as well as its first mayor and treasurer when it incorporation took place on November 7th, 1892. At this time there were only six white residents living within corporate limits – four families plusCaptain Shealy – while 120 black residents resided within unincorporated areas west and north ofJacksonville; these people were mainly slaves working on white landowners' fields orchards or cane farms during the early days post-Reconstruction period when African Americans constituted a majority within Floridian society In 1899 Enterprise Cotton Company organized a large acreage grazing farm known as “Bald Eagle Ranch” east side Highway 98 between County Road 400 N (now Business US-1) and FM 3471 (now US-441), which later became known as “Oakland Park” agricultural land because it adjoined Colonel John A.'s proprietary cotton plantation called Bald Eagle Station northeast corner FM 2742 (now I-4). This enterprise allowed white farmers access to some 2 million bushels/acre @ 30¢ per bushel - an amount equivalent to over 20% all U.S.-grown cotton sales during 1911 alone! ranching operations continued until 1946 when all but one acreage comprising “Bald Eagle Ranch” reverted back into Indian control under Federal Military Administration restrictions following World War II . After years of litigation by nearby homeowners associations over environmental concerns related thereto grazing operations ceased altogether because most leases expired without renewal; however some remnant animals have been grazed by owner's descendants ever since !!Over $40M has been paid out through grazing leases either directly or indirectly attributable to original Bald Eagle Ranch operation ...... Today there are just 10 acres remaining undeveloped adjacent towards Interstate 4 Exit #7 ....... While much has changed since then including high school annexation into neighboring communities such as Osceola Lake City et al., much about this rural community remains unchanged including its rich history associated with agriculture ......

In 1870, the area that would become Oakland Park was part of Jacksonville, Florida. The first Europeans to visit what is now Oakland Park were Spanish traders in 1655. They named the area "Tenerife" after their island in the Caribbean Sea. Oakland Park was first developed as a citrus plantation by speculators from New Orleans in 1875. The orange crop failed and the plantation was abandoned, but it became a popular location for vacationing bankers and other professionals. In 1912, developers built an amusement park called Paramount on Lake Worth Boulevard south of Duval Street. It quickly became one of Jacksonville's most popular tourist destinations. The city government purchased Paramount in 1916 and renamed it Regent Park after its original owner, Regent Hughes of Tampa Bay. The park changed hands several times before it was donated to the city by Mayor John Tuggle in 1947. In 1951, it was dedicated to African Americans who had played an important role in Jacksonville's history since Reconstruction: Alonzo Harris Sr., Harry Carney and James Weems Jr.. The city renovated and enlarged Regent Park throughout the 1970s and 1980s as part of efforts to revitalize downtown Jacksonville. In 1992, Regent Park lost its status as a municipally administered park when it merged with nearby Central Avenue to form City Hall Square redevelopment project which also included Stonewall Jackson Drive Recreation Center
