In 1961, after Pan American World Airways vacated their last two Jacksonville-based aircraft hangars (one on First Street and one on Second Street), plans were made to demolish both buildings and build an airport using parts of former Pan American hangar property on Third Street between Military Road and South Boulevard; however this idea failed to gain traction due to opposition from locals who felt it would destroy their homes and businesses along Third Street corridor during what they saw as a major development opportunity for their community

Oakland Park is a small town in the Florida panhandle, located about 30 miles northeast of Tampa. The population was 992 at the 2000 census. It was named for General James O. Oakland, who fought in the Seminole Wars and served as governor of Florida from 1845 to 1849. Oakland Park is part of Hillsborough County and is situated on Lake Tarpon, an artificial reservoir created by Dred Scott v. Sanford (1857). The community has a post office and a few stores. The first settlers in Oakland Park were farmers who arrived in the early 1800s. They built homes around what is now downtown Oakland Park, which they called "the Grove." In 1829, General James O. Oakland designated it as a county seat and donated land to build a jail and courthouse. In 1903, the town trustees petitioned US President Theodore Roosevelt for permission to erect a monument to him in honor of his military service in Cuba during the Spanish-American War (1898-1902). Roosevelt granted their request but ordered that no monuments be erected until after he had been elected president two years later. In 1907, Mayor John Hynes recommended that the name of the new high school be changed from Stroudsburg High School to "Oakland Park" after General James O. Oakland's home state of California (then known as Mexico). The change was approved by voters and became effective on September 8, 1907. As one of only two towns in Hillsborough County with its own post office (the other being Plantation), mail delivery took place here until 1966 when USPS replaced ZIP code 46834 with 33911 due to changes within Hillsborough County made more efficient under USPS regulations then having separate rural areas within each county like they did prior to 1965 when ZIP code 46834 applied only within cities/towns while villages had their own codes outside city limits). The old post office building still stands today as property tower apartments are currently being developed along Euclid Avenue next door across from IHOP restaurant serving students attending nearby universities such as USF & Tampa State Universities

In 1898, a stadium was built by the City of Oakland Park to house American football matches between teams from nearby Fort Lauderdale and Miami. In 1903, a golf course was added to the park and it became one of South Florida's most popular tourist destinations. In 1928, the baseball team ofOakland Park gave its first ever win against a major league club - a 9-3 victory over New York Yankees at Tampa Stadium. On May 3rd 1931 pitcher Lefty Gomez recorded his only complete game performance as a professional player when he struck out 10 batters over 8 innings versus Jacksonville (JAX) at JELD-WEN Field; this marked only the second time that an African American had appeared in an MLB game! On November 5th 1933 racially motivated violence erupted across South Florida after HurricaneBroward caused extensive damage throughout much of Tampa Bay Area including Oakland Park which resulted in more than 100 arrests and $4 million worth of property damage; most notably during Jackson Square where stores were looted and burned; several black men were lynched as a result! The racist violence finally ended on October 14th 1934 following intervention by then Governor Hugh Carey who called for calm before local elections scheduled for that day; these resulted in increased support for Garner’s opponent Al Smith who became governor instead! As part of its centennial celebration in 2002,the City ofOakland Park dedicated two miles of new streetscape to commemorate Black History Month while also unveiling new public art featuring historical photos and models depicting black Atlantans working or living within their communities prior to World War II.
