Oakland Park is a small town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,218 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola-Ft. Walton Beach-Boca Raton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1887 by Irish immigrants who had traveled through Mobile Bay to escape religious persecution in their homeland. They named their new settlement after Oakland Place on London's Westminster Bridge where they had lunch with friends on their way home from that day's work. Oakland Park was founded in 1868 by a group of Jacksonville citizens who purchased 2,000 acres of land east of the St. Johns River. The community grew rapidly and soon boasted a library, churches, schools and a post office. In 1872, the town hall was built and in 1898 the first park was established on the site. The park became popular with residents for its wide variety of activities including picnics, ball games and concerts. In 1916, Oakland Park incorporated as a city and began to develop its own infrastructure such as water supplies, sewers and roads. By 1940, Oakland Park had reached its peak population with around 50,000 people living there. However, during World War II the city experienced significant growth due to military recruitment that occurred within the local community. The population increased by over 60% from 1941 until 1945 when it reached over 100,000 people again. After the war ended in 1945 however, Oakland Park declined significantly as many residents left for new neighborhoods or relocated to other parts of Florida due to economic instability during those years. As result of this decline in population density however, much of what is now known as downtown Oakland Park was never developed and only consists of a few small residential buildings dating back to the early 1900s
