Oakland Park, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,447 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Oakland Park is located on State Road 2 east of Clearwater and south of Cutler. The first white person to set foot in what is now Oakland Park was David Barron in 1838. He founded a post office there with the name "Barronville". In 1841, he sold land to J.B. Hurt for $5,000 which became the nucleus of what would become cityhood by 1870 when Hurt gave it to John Ponce de Leon who named it "Oakland Park" after his birthplace of Barcelona, Spain. In 1902 William McKinley made an unsuccessful run for President as a Republican and moved from Buffalo to stay close to family friends McKinley had made in Buffalo; among these were two brothers who later bought and developed much of downtown Oakland Park - Harry Baughman (1912) and Jack Baughman (1921). Jack's wife Alice Coolidge ran unsuccessfully for Congress from that district in 1936 before becoming Lady Bird Johnson's Vice President on her victory over James Fenton that year; she also served as mayor from 1959 until her death in 1992. On November 7th 1913 voters approved annexation by Hillsborough County due to heavy development potential caused by World War I veterans being discharged here from Camp Pickett outside nearby Fort Myers Beach (). In 1875, the city of Tampa purchased land at what is now Old Fort Myers Boulevard and Ridge Road for $10,000. This allowed the city to annex Oakland Park into its boundaries. The growth of Tampa led to the annexation of other nearby towns such as Clearwater and St Petersburg. In 1904, Tampa annexed Pinellas County which included much of today's Pinellas County. As a result, Oakland Park became part of Hillsborough County. In 1911, the City Council voted to rename Oakland Park "The Beach Estates" in honor of Mayor George Halsey who had made beach-building an important part of his mayoral career. The name change lasted until 1925 when it reverted back to its original name once again after Mayor John Fenton announced that he would not run for reelection in 1925 due to health reasons. Afterward, it continued under the name "Oakland Park." On October 1st, 1975,[1] following passage by voters on a referendum striping off portions of Hillsborough County which were then unincorporated areas[2],[3]the city renamed itself Panama City Beach Municipality with effect from November 1st1975.[4] The primary function and purpose for which the Panama City Beach Municipality was created was “to provide municipal services necessary for the citizens within its limits” as stated in its charter article II section 3(a). These services may include but are not limited to water supply, waste disposal (municipal solid waste), fire prevention and suppression; police protection; seaports operations; streetlights; street paving; zoning changes; etc., among others tasks that will be performed by this municipality pursuant to law or ordinance passed by resolution adopted by vote at meeting or through delegation from one or more members thereof duly authorized thereto provided no Such ordinance shall conflict with any rights reserved hereinunder unto any other municipality within our limits” according To charter article II section 3(a) On November 1st1975 Panama City Beach Municipality re-named itself as "Panama City Beach"
