Oakland Park is located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The city was founded on December 12, 1903 by developer George A. Smith and named after the nearby Oakland Forest Preserve. The area now known as downtown Oakland Park was first settled in the late 1800s by African Americans who worked as sharecroppers and landowners in what is now Overtown neighborhood. In 1916, the City of Oakland Park incorporated as a municipality with a population of just over 1,000 people. In 1948, when Miami-Dade County became an official county within Miami-Dade Province, Oakland Park lost its municipal status and became part of the new jurisdiction.
