Oakland Park is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–Boca Raton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was organized on November 10, 1892 when the area that now includes Oakland Park and portions of Citrus Heights were annexed by Jacksonville. The first post office in Oakland Park was established on October 26, 1893. In 1924, when Jacksonville and Lake City were merged into Jacksonville, much of what is now Oakland Park became part of Citrus Heights which also became a city. In 1960s and 1970s there was an effort to change the name of the town to something more racially diverse such as "Tallahassee" or "Etowah". However these efforts were unsuccessful. The only major businesses in town are two gasoline stations: Chevron and Shell fuel stores; a grocery store; and a few restaurants including one with Chinese cuisine called Golden Temple China House. There are also several small businesses that service local residents such as mechanics, hair stylists, boat builders/repair shops etc., but they do not generate much economic activity in comparison to larger businesses closer to downtown Jacksonville or Lake City which continue to thrive despite having no annexation requests from their smaller neighbor during this time period.

In 1902, construction began on Bayfront Drive which connected downtown Jacksonville with the newly annexed community of Plantation Key near Stonington Beach and later led to development along Bayfront Boulevard including several shopping malls and other businesses such as Publix Supermarkets and JCPenney stores before being torn down for housing developments during the late 1990s through 2000s era called "The Mall". During World War II, many locals worked at Naval Base Pearl Harbor which took place just south of town; some remain today as veterans or their descendants live nearby including members of both naval infantry battalions (the 1st Battalion III Florida Infantry) that fought at Iwo Jima and Okinawa; as well as Headquarters Company 56th Infantry Regiment (1st Brigade), 25th Infantry Division Combat Team—nicknamed "The Big Red One"—that served in Saipan during World War II; these people are sometimes also referred to collectively as "Midshipmen" or simply "Naval personnel." Many residents also enlisted in local units directly during World War II such as Headquarters Company 180th Bombardment Group (Heavy), 313rd Bombardment Squadron (Medium) which flew combat missions over Japan from Midway Atoll until 1945; these men are often referred to collectively by their unit numbers rather than individual names because they were part of a single organization with similar mission throughout much of the war time period across numerous battlefield locations across Japan including Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Guam Islander Islands etc.; finally most recently there's been an effort started by some within the community to have Naval Base New London renamed after USS Constitution Museum Shipwreck Research Center following her sinking off Sarasota Heads State Forest back in 2015 while still docked there enroute from NAS Pensacola/Fort Myers bound for Honolulu but she never reached her destination due to collision with another vessel while en route causing severe damage thereto A number of smaller restaurants dotning various parts Of town like Dutch Bros., Sonic Drive-In & Cozy Corner ; Chinese Take-Out - Dragon Garden & Jade Garden ; Italian Grocery - La Bottega del Mario ; BBQ Place - Joe's Barbecue

Oakland Park was originally founded in 1819 by Colonel John L. Stonington as a getaway for Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard and his wife, Sarah Randolph. The original name of the community may have been Polynesia, but it was changed to Oakland Park after the map of West Florida that showed an area with the same name in east Jacksonville, Florida. In 1853, a post office was established at Oakland Park and mail was brought into the community through horse-drawn wagons from Jacksonville. By 1870, there were three hotels in town - the White House Hotel, built by Captain James Wofford; the Floridian Hotel, also known as the Olmsted Hotel; and the De Witt House which served as an inn until 1888 when it burned down. A second hotel called The American had been built by Major Edwin Mosely but it failed to take off and was sold for $10,000 to Jno Haggerty who reopened it as The Oakland Park Inn in 1893 under new management including eventual headliner Edison Fenton who owned it from 1903 until his death in 1919. Edison's business partner Alfred Vail opened a grocery store next door to The American on Euclid Avenue in 1904 which became one of America's first supermarkets when it opened its doors.. In 1922 local doctor Willis Cope started providing medical care to residents of nearby Deerfield Beach via drive-in surgery from his home on Uptown Parkway near University Boulevard In 1925 City Councilman Jesse Simons (D) proposed building a high school but no action was taken on this idea until 1957 when Simons' son Jonathan Sims introduced Resolution 927 (13th Amendment) which called for construction of an all-boys school within walking distance of downtown Oakland Park with plans to eventually annex land surrounding Seminole High School having been leased from that school district since 1934 . It wasn't until 1960 that finally decisions were made to build Forest Hills High School adjacent to Sanford Stadium while still keeping open The Oakland Park Inn as a hotel where students could stay before or after their game appearances Finally commercial development took hold with what is now known as Downtown Disney being developed along State Road 97 northwest of downtown during those years with retail stores like Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney & Co., Giannini's Pizza Place and most notably anchor Dillard’s department store opening up during that time starting out small but quickly growing into one of South Florida’s largest shopping destinations
