He built a cabin on what is now Northwest corner of East and North avenues. Sitton's descendants still live there today. In 1928 Drury & Sons shipyard was started by Jens Holtzclaw and his brother-in-law Lester Drury with their son John Davenport as president and vice president (). The company produced more than 100 ships including many that became famous such as USS Constitution and USS Maine (). In 1933 John Davenport married Mildred Meacham () from Pensacola who later served two terms as President pro tempore of the Florida State Senate (). Their daughter Betty Davenport ran for office many times during her father's life including being elected mayor twice (1972–1974; 1978). The name of the town is taken from their maternal grandfather, Walton's father-in-law, Oakland Terrell. The population was 599 at the 2010 census. The town was laid out on a series of hills that are now part of the city of Tampa. When it first came into being, Oakland Park consisted of just a few homes, some stores and a post office. In 1904 the community had a school, church and dance hall built. In 1907 the railroad arrived in Polk County and brought with it new jobs for people in the area; soon there were businesses open everywhere including an oil well and gas station near oak park's center square. In 1924 another store opened up next to one of those old oil wells and this became known as "The Village" because all these businesses were clustered together like family members around one common ancestor/member figure! It wasn't long before other things started happening too; churches began to be built (including Jacksonville's first Baptist church), schools were erected (including what is now Hillsborough High School) and various sports teams were formed including football (the first team played at what is now Taliaferro Stadium), baseball (the first team played at what is now Gulfstream Field) and golf (the original course was called Agate which later changed its name to Oakland Park). One interesting fact about this time period is that many residents who would later move away from home bought land here when they found out how easy it would be to commute to work or live close by without having to leave their homes! This trend continued until after World War II when most people left for better opportunities overseas or when subdivisions popped up all over America – making way for neighborhoods full of single-family homes!
