The history of Oakland Park, Florida started with the arrival of Spanish traders in the early 1800s. They brought a variety of goods and people to this part of Florida, including gold and silver miners. The first Europeans to live in Oakland Park were the Methodists who founded a small town called Methodistown in 1836. In 1868, General John H. Morgan arrived in Jacksonville and opened what is now Jacksonville Landing on St Johns River. He wanted to make Jacksonville an international port so he built warehouses and docks that are still standing today. In 1870, he bought 2,000 acres near downtown Jacksonville from A. Purdy for $10 per acre. This land was later renamed Morgan State Forest after General Morgan’s son-in-law, James Brouncker Hughes (1829-1915). During the late 1800s and early 1900s, many industries were established in Oakland Park including shipbuilding, metalworking, fishing, agriculture and cattle farming. In 1915, the City of Jacksonville annexed Oakland Park which made it a part of Jacksonville Municipality which then became Jackson County when it was created by Congress in 1907. The first post office atOakland Park was established on December 3rd 1909 local time under the name “Jacksonville” because there wasn’t one located within our boundaries until 1911 when we moved into our current location! Many features that make up modern day Oakland Park were developed during this time such as: •• Streetlights – Most streets had electric lights by 1912; •• Public Works Department - One can find evidence of street paving and road repairs dating back to 1916; •• Recreation - There are numerous parks such as Canoe Lake or Calvert Island Lake where you can swim or boat; •• Businesses - Many businesses have been located here over the years such as JCPenney Coffee & Donuts (now Dunkin' Donuts), Barnes & Noble bookstore/cafeteria complex (now Kroger), ExxonMobil gas station/warehouse complex (now Marathon Petroleum), Applebees restaurant/bar complexes (ExxonMobil gas station also includes adjacentApplebee's Liquor Store), etc.;

Oakland Park, Florida is a small town located in Miami-Dade County,Florida. The population of Oakland Park was 7,868 at the 2010 census. It is bordered by Cutler to the south and east, Homestead to the north, and Boca Raton to the west. The community was named for John F. Richardson, who purchased 640 acres of land here in 1892. The city limits were expanded 3 miles in 1961 when part of Boca Raton was annexed by the city; this annexation resulted in Blvd US 1 becoming an urban arterial road within city limits rather than just serving as a rural border between them like it had been before. A large shopping center called The Square anchored by Sears and JCPenney opened along I-95E in 1985 adjacent to Evergreen Mall which closed down after years of neglect and abandonment due primarily to budget cuts during the 1990s recession). In 1888, it became part of Pompano Beach and remained that way until 1974 when it became part of Miami-Dade County. In 1914, construction began on what would become one of America's most famous golf courses - Pinehurst Country Club. Designed by famed architect James Crayton and built over six years with assistance from local capitalists Amory Lovins and Hernando De Soto III, Pinehurst quickly became one of Hollywood's best known courses and has been visited by movie stars and millionaires alike ever since.

During this time new subdivisions were built along East Indian Key Road which led to increased traffic congestion on East Indian Key Road which caused some residents of Oakland Park to call for a Traffic Improvement Plan (TIP) which was designed to reduce traffic congestion throughout the neighborhood while preserving access to their homes and gardens. Today, most residents of Oakland Park are still enjoying their summers here despite ongoing traffic congestion on East Indian Key Road
