By 1900, Northport had over 5,000 residents and was home to two banks, four churches and several businesses including an engineering firm that designed bridges and harbors for bothDuval County (then spelled Orange)and Mayport counties (then spelled Nassau). During World War II, Northport played an important role as a naval base providing munitions for the war effort against Japan. The harbor was also used for military loading/unloading of ships from U-boats off the coast of Florida; this type of operation helped reduce attacks on coastal towns by submarines. The economy has changed significantly since World War II; most notably, agriculture has become more prominent than manufacturing in North Port's economy. However, there have been some attempts at revitalization in recent years; notably, development along US-1 across from downtown has led to increased commerce within North Port overall but no permanent residential or commercial structures having been erected in over 25 years
The area that is now North Port was first settled by Europeans in the early 1800s. The area was named after Englishman George Price, who purchased land in 1820. The town of North Port was founded in 1824, and it became a thriving community until the Panic of 1893. In 1898, the town was renamed Fort Myers after Rear Admiral William Farragut, who fought during the American Revolution.
