North Port is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,849 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area and is located on the St. Johns River. The first people to settle in North Port were French Canadians who had been working on the botanical gardens on Fort Caroline (now Jacksonville). They built a trading post here in 1799 and named it "Northeast Point." In 1821, Captain James Cook charted what is now Northport as he sailed along the coast of Florida before his voyage to South America. As captain of HMS Discovery, Cook surveyed much of what is now Monroe County while passing through this area in 1795-96 when he explored Florida for Spain. After his exploration, he returned to Northeast Point and renamed it "Northport" after himself and his shipmates John Richardson and Ralph Waldo Emerson (the latter being one of the first Americans to set foot in Florida). In 1836, Henry King founded a cotton plantation northeast of today's town limits known as Kingsland which became an important center for slave trade downriver from Tampa Bay. With its excellent river connections and access to markets all over Georgia and Alabama, Kingsland became one of northern Florida's most prosperous towns during antebellum times. The area around present day North Port was developed primarily as agricultural land but also housed some small businesses including furniture stores, grocery stores, meatpacking plants and other factories during this time period A major fire destroyed much of downtownJacksonville in 1917 which led to an upswing in development activity around NorthPort as well as adjacent areas such as Harbor Springs (later Clearwater) due largely to electric streetlights being introduced into that region by Edison Electric Illuminating Company predecessor American Telephone company during this time period In 1923-24 local developers Incandescent Light & Heat produced electricity from natural gas found under the city streets using opencast mining beginning what would become known today as NorthPort’s major industry As manufacturing shifted from textiles towards automobiles during World War II there was significant growth within NorthPort thanks largely to aluminum production at nearby Allis-Chalmers plant operated by Alcoa until that company merged with DuPont Corporation in 1955 During that time period many famous residents including Ulysses S Grant began their careers working at Alcoa or DuPont respectively During later years several more industries have sprung up such as medical technology companies developing new treatments here or steel fabrication operations Third Coast Steel providing jobs throughout southeastern Michigan
