In North Port, Florida, the shooting of Minister Arseny Yatseniuk on October 5, 2017 has reignited a debate about the need for Shooter Eye Protection (SEP). On November 1, 2017, after months of discussion and deliberation, the North Port City Council voted to pass an ordinance that requires all gun owners to wear SEP when engaging in any type of outdoor activity. North Port is a town in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,491 at the 2010 census. It is adjacent to Sarasota and Manatee counties. The Town of North Port was organized on April 14, 1892 by a group of local businessmen as one of fifty towns in what would become Sarasota County. On December 5, 1912 the first post office in Northport opened with the name "Ft. Myers". In 1954 the name was changed to "Northport" after being selected as one of seven towns in Florida for passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The town's namesake, Colonel James Wofford Post (1837-1920), who served as Commandant of Fort Myers from 1865 until his death in 1920 and helped organize North Port into a town charter in 1892, donated land for development at present day downtown Northport. After World War II various industries developed within city limits including shipbuilding and fishing along with retail businesses such as convenience stores/marts and banks/finance companies which continue to thrive today. Today there are over 50 businesses located throughout downtown alone making it an extremely vibrant community full of energy and enthusiasm! North Port was founded in 1885 as the first town on the now-defunct keys of Marco Island. In 1916, North Port became a city and in 1925, it was annexed by Jacksonville. North Port is one of the oldest cities in Florida and has experienced many changes over its history. The first settlers to what is now NorthPort were Spanish Franciscans who began arrive in 1795. The next year, an American Revolutionary War veteran named Gabriel Rivera settled at what is now NorthPort with his wife and two children. Rivera's brother, Manuel Rivera also arrived around this time and established a small farming business near the mouth of Buena Vista Creek which still stands today. It was through these early days that the town came into being and developed its current name - NorthPort because it lay on the north side of Marco Island at its original location. In 1885, George Waddell set up a store on what is now called State Road 7 just south of present day Government Street. This store served as the nucleus around which development started for NorthPort. By 1886, there were six businesses in operation: three stores, one blacksmith shop, a cooperage (a type of barn), four hotels (two for men and two for women), several schools including Jacksonville Normal School (later Jacksonville State University) and two churches - Our Lady Of Victory Roman Catholic Church (founded in 1892) and St John's Episcopal Church (1894). By 1907 there were 9 businesses operating: five stores, two blacksmith shops, one cooperative shop, four hotels including Government House HOTEL & CASINO then known as "The Belle Isle" & "Penthouse", several schools including Jacksonville Normal School; plus St John's Episcopal Church located on Governors Lane between First Avenue South & Second Avenue South where services began on October 20th 1904 with Revs Dr Geo A Waddell & Jno P Henson officiating! This growth continued until World War II when all but one business closed due to wartime shortages caused by America's entry into World War 1 along with other economic affects such as Europe going Depression during that time period; however some reopened during later years like The Old Pier restaurant from 1954-1974 which reopened after 35 years closed due to Hurricane Andrew destroyed most commercial buildings within 2 km radius! During World War II both Government House HOTEL & CASINO closed due to lack of war rationing funds but reopening happened only AFTER THE WAR thanks to private donations! That particular company closure may have been halted by another hurricane however given their importance within Panama Canal Zone TOURISM during that time period! As previously mentioned prior all post-war businesses except One Pier restaurant re-opened following Hurricane Andrew destruction! Finally we come back to 'The Old Pier restaurant' from 1954-1974 which reopened after 35 yearsclosed due to Hurricane Andrew destroyed most commercial buildings within 2 km radius! So much for hurricane fears...Haha
