North Port is a town in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. North Port is part of the Sarasota–Bradenton–Fort Myers metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now North Port were Indian traders from South Florida who met Spanish explorers in 1565 and 1566. In 1795, the British claimed Fort Jefferson as part of their Pensacola Expedition and built it on present-day Biscayne Boulevard. The fort served as a British military post until 1810 when it was abandoned after Seminole Indians destroyed it. On December 8, 1824, Native American Tomoka Indians attacked and burned Fort Jefferson; the U.S. garrison responded with artillery fire that killed more than 150 Tomoka Indians and drove them away for over a year In 1834 an act was passed by Congress authorizing American settlers to settle in what is now Sarasota County In 1840 two white men named George Lowry erected a cabin on the site of what would later become NorthPort In 1850 John Haines established a salt works here which continued until1890 When oil drilling began nearby, NorthPort became known as "the chosen place for oil exploration" The town's first school opened in 1861 In 1865 General Sherman's army invaded Florida during his march through the state and sacked Jacksonville before going into Tampa Bay (present-day Clearwater) In 1870 Captain John Worthy founded Jugglers' Point Light House which still stands today (near Old Town) In 1886 Captain Charles Alesi developed an oil well at Big Creek ]] near present day Northport]], which led to increased production and development around this time The first store opened here in 1893] It was one of only two stores open in west Florida at this time ]][ After World War II there was significant growth due to paper mills located adjacent to various offshore rigs This growth came to a abrupt end however when those mills closed or went out of business during the 1950s And 1960s associated with major changes brought about by baby boomers
