North Port, Florida is a city located in Sarasota County, Florida. The population was 25,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sarasota-Bradenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now NorthPort were Spanish settlers in 1795 who named it San Pedro de la Vega after St Peter's Bay near Barcelona, Spain. A post office was established in 1836 and by 1848 there were over 100 residents living in what would become North Port. The first town meeting was held on November 2nd of that year and 5 people attended with Wm Burt as chairperson. The name "Northport" was given to the community by Major General James Wilkinson during his visit to Sarasota Bay on January 11th, 1849 following his victory over Mexican forces at Palo Alto Creek Bridge on December 13th of that year. By 1860 there were 265 residents living in NorthPort with 95% being white AngloSaxon Protestants from England or Ireland while 10% consisted of African Americans from South Carolina or Georgia mixed with European American settlers from New York City or Pennsylvania along the southern coast of America looking for land grants and opportunities for agricultural production as well as commerce through ports such as Tampa/St Petersburg (then Clearwater) which then served as a staging ground for goods destined for Cuba and other parts of Latin America etc... In 1865 when Fort Brooke was built north of town mouth Soundexavalent Commander John Rodgers reported; "I have reason to believe that Fort Brooke could be easily taken by an attack by small boats manned by men only’". He also stated “I am not much mistaken about the soundexavant situation hereabouts...” . On October 8th 1861 Captain David Fitchburgh commanding US Ships Franklin & John Rodgers sent HMS Dolphin under Commodore Augustus Kelley with orders to take possession of all land eastward up sound extending 12 miles (18 km) from mouth without any sortie until order can be received from higher command authorising such an expedition... After exploring several points they arrived off sound's eastern extremity Oct 9 [1861] disembarking their officers and marines upon landing they went immediately intoOUNPORT GULF FOREST PRESERVATION DISTRICT Headquarters - 15 N Main St -White Hall Plank House On July 4th 1886 route 66 became active when US 1 Express Train ran past NorthPort junction consisting of 6 cars running northeasterly parallel to US1 southbound just past present day First Street intersection then turned left going easterly parallel Second Street thence turning right again going northeasterly parallel Third Avenue intersecting current Fourth Street some 20 MILES FROM NORTH PORT JUNCTION *While this express train passed through NorthPort Junction there never actually existed a direct connection between US1 & 66 however today you canstill see evidence where one stopped just short of current day First Street intersection* In 1895 United States Steel Corporation opened its steel mill on Menard Island adjacent to Today's Marina International Airportnorthwest corner lot now used for golf courseLloyd Stephens Engineering Company shipyard opened in 1907 factory closed in 1961 famous propeller builder Taylorcraft Manufacturing Company founded 1958 largest employer near plant In 1924 local banks formed Federal Trust Co., later State Farm Insurance Company among others began operations downtown Today many businesses are still headquartered downtown but most activities are now centered around Marina Boulevard
