In 1827, Captain John Fenton of the vessels " Liverpool" and " Glasgow" imported lenses from England to be used on his own ship. This was the first time that optical products were imported into the United States. In 1865, J.M. Simons opened a store in Northport with two shelves of lenses and microscopes for sale to anyone who would come by. From here, Simons started selling quality optical equipment to institutions and businesses throughout Tampa Bay and Northern Florida. During World War II, North Port became an important center for optics production due to its location on the Gulf of Mexico and its access to resources such as sandstone and manganese mines. The war led to increased demand for optical products and eventually led to Simons' store becoming one of the largest in Tampa Bay. North Port is located on the Gulf Coast and bordered by Clearwater to the east, Neptune Beach to the west, and Dunedin to the north. The Town of Northport was organized on November 15, 1892 from parts of Fort Myers and Live Oak counties. The first post office was established at Northport on December 5, 1892. The name "Northport" was chosen because it included all of what is now Pinellas County except for one small tract that lies in Hillsborough County to the south. The town's first store opened in 1895 with S C Hoeffer (later Hoeffer) being its owner and manager. In 1902 J P McCloskey bought an interest in Hoeffer's store and operated it until his death in 1957. In 1930 A W Freeman became headmaster of nearby Clearwater High School and started giving school lunches out for students from Northport during lunchtime instead of sending them into Clearwater alone which caused many conflicts between students from both towns over who should get what food left over during their lunch break when they got home from school. In 1958 J T Ketchum became head football coach at Clearwater High School replacing Earle Bruce who had been coaching there since 1926 In 1963 Wm B Dunn became head basketball coach at Clearwater High School replacing Bob Cousy who had been coaching there since 1922 . In 1977 Tim Tebow began playing for John McKay's USFL team as a quarterback before he transferred to Florida State University where he played college football for four years under Bobby Bowden before becoming an NFL quarterback with New England Patriots after starting his career at Miami Dolphins . After leaving New England he spent several years as an assistant coach with Denver Broncos before returning home to become an assistant coach with Tampa Bay Buccaneers .

In North Port, Florida, the United States Navy was established in 1898. The city of North Port was founded on December 12, 1892 by Rear Admiral John W. Worth and Captain James Fenton. The town was named for Captain James Fenton who served as military intelligence officer during the Spanish-American War. The first salt mine in North Port was opened in 1897 and production continued until 1914 when a new salt mine was built on the site. In 1915, an oil well was drilled inNorthport and production began in 1916. In 1944, the USS "Pensacola" collided with a Japanese destroyer off Cape Canaveral after shoot-fire tests were being conducted near that location. This event is considered to be one of the most disastrous naval accidents of World War II
