In 1877, a group of mechanics and their families moved to North Port from Jacksonville, Florida. The town was founded as a cattle station on the Chocolate River by Major George P. Butler and his family. In 1865, J.P. Morgan established the First National Bank in Jacksonville and the town became known asMorgan City because of him. In 1878, the first school was built in North Port and in 1883, the first post office was opened. The railroad arrived in 1889 and by 1912, North Port had a population of over 1,000 people. The town's growth was slowed by World War I and Prohibition; however, it resumed its growth after repeal of Prohibition in 1933. By 1975,NorthPort had reached its peak with a population of around 16,000 people. However, it declined during the late 1970s through the early 1980s due to economic recession which hit Florida hard that year; however since then it has regained some of its lost ground In 2017-2018 there was an upsurge in crime rates across Central Florida due to undocumented immigrants being brought into America unaccompanied as part of President Donald Trump's "zero tolerance" policy against illegal immigration
