North Port is a city in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 24,591 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ft. Myers metropolitan area. North Port is known for its salt industry and as the home of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune newspaper. In 1892 Captain John A. Henshaw established a trading post on Biscayne Bayou in what is now Northport, after purchasing land from Isaac Taylor and others in that year. He named it "Henshaw's Bay" because he had removed to this location from Fort Myers, where he had been captain of the USS Constitution under President James K. Polk during the American Civil War (1861-65). In 1898 Commodore Jesse J. Jones founded another trading post near present day Everglades City and named it "Jones' Harbour". Captains Edward Payson and Hiram Key opened their posts at Northport in 1903 when they acquired additional land along Biscayne Bayou from Captain Henshaw's heirs; Key bought out Payson's interest two years later The first commercially developed region within modern-day North Port was on Fort Myers Beach Boulevard which ran north/south between US 1/US 441 corridors then called State Road 519 (later US 192) and became known as "The Strip". Development continued ashore with new subdivisions built along State Road 580 until 1969 when FM 1695 (then SR 580) connected downtown with newly created north side neighborhoods adjacent to Biscayne Bayou via an expressway approach road called Sunrise Boulevard which became known as I-4 or Gulf Freeway today Today most of what once constituted Northport has been redeveloped into evergreen shopping centers such as The Mall at Marinasimba Isles Shopping Center, Academy Park mall, Walmart Supercenter & more - accounting for over 60% of all permanent housing units in town limits since 2004 . The town name originated with the Spanish word for "Portugal," Punta de la Cruz. In 1898, an act of Congress designated Northport as a port city and created a municipality within Monroe County to administer its affairs. In 1937, North Port became part of Jacksonville as part of the federal government's relocation of population during the Great Depression. It reverted to its original name upon Jacksonville's incorporation into statehood in 1959. Miami Vice star Rick James lived in North Port from 1984-1996 while he was filming his movie project Reality TV Land there; however, this story has been debunked as false information given that no evidence exists to support it beyond unconfirmed claims made by James himself or independent sources such as local news reports at the time. From 1974-2000, North Port served as home to Operation Neptune's Spear which was an American military operation aimed at rooting out al-Qaeda members living in Southeast Asia. During this time period many terrorist suspects were interrogated and/or investigated at nearby Fort Myers Beach Police Department's crime lab where they were tested for explosives before being released back into society without charge or trial
