In 1912, fortifications were erected to protect the town from marauding submarines and in 1915, it became a city under the name of Northport after incorporation into Sarasota County In 1954, the city merged with neighboring Bradenton to form a larger metropolitan area known as "The Bradenton Cluster". North Port has experienced rapid growth since then with over 20% population growth between 1990 and 2010. The population peaked at 11,826 in 2000 but has slowly declined since then due to various factors such as falling real estate values and an overall decline in maritime activity within Sarasota County which has resulted in fewer jobs for residents of North Port
North Port was a small town in Lee County, Florida until the early 1920s. The first permanent settler in North Port was George Fenton, who arrived in 1884. By 1912, there were four families living in North Port: the Beavers, Browns, Harts and Lincolns. In 1916, the United States Postal Service moved from Fort Myers to establish an office at Northport and by 1922 there were 10 postal employees working at the post office. In 1937-38, a new post office building was built on Main Street and it served as the town's municipal center for many years. After World War II ended, North Port lost its status as a local community and it gradually declined over time. In 1972-73, all but one of its buildings were razed to make way for a new shopping mall which eventually became known as "The Mall". Today NorthPort is a ghost town with only a few remaining residents.
