North Port, Florida is a city located on the Gulf of Mexico in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. North Port has a history dating back to 1892 when it was founded as a small trading post by John S. Lewis and James Dickey. It became an important seaport for cotton and other goods moving from the Deep South to market in the early 19th century. In 1907, North Port was designated a commercial port for Escambia County by state law. The city's first mayor was J.B. Morin; its first councilman was Wm Henson Capps; and its first recorder was Phebe Stroud Saunders (1907-1920). In 1920, NorthPort became an independent municipality withinEscambia County with its own government and school system. By 1970, however, Escambia County had eliminated all but two of NorthPort's six municipalities - reducing its total population to just over 1,000 residents - making it one of only four cities in Escambia County without any municipal autonomy (the others being Pensacola Beach (1984), Gadsden Junction (1998), and Oxford (2002)). In 2003, then-Mayor Larry Hogan announced plans to reduce the number of municipalities inEscambia County by one more - eliminating both Pensacola Beach and Gadsden Junction completely - although no formal vote had been taken yet at that time to make that decision official. On March 21st 2004 Mayor Hogan announced his intention to reduce the number of Municipalities in Escambia County from six to five effective July 1st 2004 under new countywide governance plans which would have left NorthPort with sole Municipal status...The planned municipality would have included both townhouses on bayoushoused between White Street State Park and US Highway 98E)and single family homes bordering Bayou Lafourche on Cemetery Road)...In response to this news Mayor Hogan stated "It's clear that we need more flexibility so that our municipalities can continue meeting their needs while still providing essential services such as road maintenance or firefighting"...On July 2nd2004 voters passed an ordinance approving Mayor Hogan's intent to reduce the number of Municipalities in Escambia COUNTY from six to five effective July1st2004 following public feedback collected during a referendum campaign....With less than two months before implementation local officials began working feverishly behind closed doors with county commissionersto finalize details about how this proposed change would work exactly...The reductionist plan currently envisioned by city leaders would see all but two of Northport's six municipally autonomous neighborhoods consolidated into one larger municipality known as "Easton". Easton would consist primarily of single family homes along White Street State Park overlooking Bayou Lafourche while also including several small businesses located near US Highway 98E
North Port was founded in 1827 as a small trading post. The town grew rapidly following the opening of the Panama Canal in 1869, and by 1900 it had outgrown its original boundaries. In 1911, North Port became an official city and has since grown into one of the most populous communities onautical grounds in Florida.
