The earliest mention of guns in North Port is from 1824. A large boat, the "Piney," was built at Northport by Mr. and Mrs. James Witherspoon and was used for hunting deer, rabbits, and other game on the bayous near their plantation. The first pistols were made of hickory wood and given to the soldiers of Fort Moultrie during the Seminole War. In 1829 a man named John Troup built a cabin on the bayou which served as a gunsmith shop until about 1870 when it burned down. In 1865 Captain George Johnson founded Jacksonville Landing with several hundred acres of land along the bayou that became known as Jacksonville Landing Naval Air Station (JLNAS). The landing area included an airfield with hangars, warehouses, barracks, and fuel tanks. The airfield was used primarily for training naval aviators during World War II. After World War II JLNAS transitioned into an Army Air Forces base called Jacksonville-Ft Myers AFB in 1947 before transitioning back to Navy control in 1949 as Jacksonville Naval Air Station (JNAS). In 1951 JNAS moved its mission to Eglin AFB Florida after being decommissioned at JLNAS due to budget restraints within the Navy itself. From 1951-1954 JNAS operated out of NAS Pensacola Florida which later became part of NAS Tampa Florida also under Navy control until its closure in 1989 while NAS Miami Beach stayed under Army command until 1993 when it merged into NAVSEA/NOAA's Joint Oceanographic Center (JOCC) located at St Petersburg, FL
North Port, Florida is a town located in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 33,588 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area. North Port is known for its Ports of Entry and its Shipbuilding industry. In 2007, NorthPort was selected to be one of the finalists for the city's "largest recipient" award from the Downtown Tampa Alliance in recognition of its growth as a center for arts and culture. The first Europeans to enter North Port were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew on July 24, 1564. They sighted land to the east and named it Fort Caroline after Queen Caroline of England who had landed there with her fleet on August 3 that year during her expedition against Spanish Havana ( Cuba). In 1795, Pierre-Simon La Salle founded Fort Espiritu Santo here after landing on Miami Beach following a voyage from Havana charting what he believed was an open sea route between South America and Asia. On November 12, 1795 by order of President George Washington La Salle sailed up Lake Erie past Canada's Detroit Peninsula toward what he thought would be Philadelphia but instead ran into ice storms which delayed him until February 7 when he arrived at this now frozen Harbor called Fort Christina near present day Pensacola Beach south of Jacksonville Landing on December 10th1795 while Americans were celebrating Christmas! After two years construction began wharf side fortifications were completed Plantation house erected 1802 James Marshall 1st Viscount Dunmore moved here from St Augustine FL in 1806 Captain John Fitch built four masts steamboat Florida April 30 1861 launched off New River May 4 1861 Captain Alfred Thayer Captured Pirate Captain John Gaffney October 15 1862 Ft Pierce Naval Station.. Captain Augustus Poe June 14 1865 Ft Pierce Naval Station decommissioned December 1865.. tugboat Alabama January 11 1870 launched off Key Largo FL moored at river mouth north side Dock piers next to old lighthouse affectionately know as “Lighthouse Point” Today home to Lady Lee State ParkHeritageBuilding(Formerly) Fort Espiritu Santo remains one of America’s most well preserved military installations dating back to 1795 when French Admiral Pierre- Simon La Salle land here following his failed attempt to claim Philadelphia as his new seat of power during the American Revolution

North Port is located on the Gulf of Mexico about 25 miles (40 km) north-northwest of Jacksonville. The town originally consisted of two small villages: Northport andPort Moresby. Northport's first post office opened in 1892. It was renamed to its present name in 1902 after the opening of the Panama Canal. The area that now makes up North Port was once part of what is now Escambia County. In 1836, Captains John D'Urville and James Cook discovered land that would become known as Escambia County when they sailed through the strait between Cuba and Pensacola Bay on their way to explore America's interior. This area would be developed into what is now North Port by Captain Charles Knight in 1870 while he served as county sheriff; Knight had been appointed by Governor William Troup to take over responsibility forEscambia County from Sheriff John Crain who resigned due to death within a year of being elected upon taking office. In 1896, General Edwin Ewell decided that Escambia County should be divided into two parts: one with Fort Walton Beach as its capital, and another without it which should be named "North Port". The towns which formed around this decision were founded quickly – Northport obtained its charter from Jacksonville City Council on December 12th 1899; however, it wasn't until February 2nd 1900 that all residents of both towns were finally able to join hands in celebration at Harbour View Park across from downtown Jacksonville for the dedication ceremonies - this event marked an important turning point for both communities as they began their long journey toward becoming one entity under one name In 1915, during World War I veteran Major General Claude Akins became military governor of Escambia County and ordered all businesses connected with war production closed including those belonging to suppliers such as Jardine & Hastings who had helped create/produce munitions for American troops overseas However there were still few restrictions placed upon industry since most people at that time lived close enoughto see/handle any new product or service coming off the assembly line . By 1918 almost every business had reopened except Jardine & Hastings which faced difficulties meeting demand from returning soldiers That same year also saw the first tractor plant open near Harbour View Park - this marked a significant increase in production given how difficult it used to be for farmers in rural areas like theirs to get seeds or tractors so they could start growing crops
