North Port is a city in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Broward County. In 1892, George Washington Hammond founded Hammond Tire & Rubber Company in what is now downtown North Port with 3 acres (1 km²) of undeveloped ground south of US-1. The company grew rapidly and by 1907 it employed over 200 workers plus an additional 300 trucks carrying products to stores across Southwest Florida. By 1920 it had become one of South Florida's largest tire companies employing 1,600 workers including 400 women. In 1924 Drs Jesse Lickstein and Harry Siedler opened Lickstein & Siedler Hospital/Dentist Clinic in downtown Northport after purchasing land from Hammond Tire & Rubber Company for $2 million dollars. In 1935 Drs Jesse Lickstein and Harry Siedler donated their extensive medical collection to Rollins College where it remains today as one of the nation’s leading medical institutions providing care for patients with all types of illnesses including cancer, AIDS etc.. In 1940 local resident Arturo Beltran founded JB Torres Promotions Corporation which became world famous for producing live bullfights throughout Latin America for televised audiences around the world starting in Mexico City before gradually moving onto other countries such as Buenos Aires, Manila and Rio de Janeiro beginning with a match at Maracanã Stadium on September 17th,. This led to increased business opportunities for both Arturo Beltran and his father Jorge Torres who started marketing beer called “Pepsi” directly to consumers throughout Latin America through their companies outlets spreading awareness about Pepsi products inside stadiums without ever having any advertising or reach outside those areas In 1957 Johnny Appleseed set up his own apple tree farm just southwestof town off I-95 next door to his family's candy store (later known as Johnny Appleseed Orchard).Johnny Appleseed was born October 20th 1913 into a farming family near Jacksonville Fl . His parents were Canfield AppleFarmersand he began picking apples when he was 5 years old . He attended Jacksonville State Teachers College from 1934-'37 where he majoring in agriculture but decided against becoming a teacher because there wasn't enough money available then to support himself while also attending college full time . When World War II began he enlisted in the Navy service like many others around here After discharge from military service he returned home worked odd jobs until 1938 when he joined daddy AppleFarmers again ..... From 1938-'39 appleseed operated part time home market selling produce direct to consumers thru his dad&mum
North Port was founded in 1853 by James K. Polk, who was then the U.S. president and brother of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. North Port became a seaport on the Florida Gulf Coast after being built on the site of an earlier Indian beach trading post called "Cotton Plant Point." The first permanent occupants were Confederate soldiers who had been evacuated from Pensacola during the American Civil War. In 1861, Union General Robert E. Lee landed at Northport to attempt to cross the bay and reach Mobile Bay, but was driven back by Confederate forces led by MajorGeneral John Fenton Hill and Lieutenant Colonel William Troup. In 1865, Northport became part of Jacksonville County when it was created from parts of Duval and Alachua Counties. After Reconstruction ended in 1877, Northport experienced rapid growth as a port town due to its location at the mouth of the St Johns River and its access to ships carrying goods from South America, Asia, Africa and Europe. The economy changed greatly during World War II when shipping stopped coming into Jacksonville because of Japanese naval operations in the area; however, North Port continued to grow as a commercial center due to its location on land that is now known as University Park Boulevard (formerly US-1). During this time, many businesses rose out of obscurity such as Gatorade which began manufacturing sports drinks in 1951; Mastercard which began processing credit cards in 1957; Boeing which began producing planes in 1958; Sears Roebuck & Co., one of America's largest retailer chains, opened its first store here in 1962; Jax Air Ports Corporation developed nearby Hernando County for air traffic control purposes; and Memorial Stadium was built for George Cohan's second performance at what would become Yankee Stadium (now Aventura Mall). On September 11th 2001, terrorists attacked the Trade Center near Manhattan Beach with two airplane crashes that killed thousands casualties including many close friends and family members of those working or living there- most notably his wife Liz Wheeler Cohan (his father had died six months earlier). This event has been described as one of biggest tragedies ever faced by Jacksonville residents/workers/citizens
