North Port, Florida is a city in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 41,876 at the 2010 census. The city boundaries were changed in 2015 to include part of Fort Lauderdale. The history of North Port goes back to 1848 when it was named for Captain John Prentice North, who had been sent by the U.S. government as an agent to trade with the Seminoles. In 1868, a group of businessmen from Jacksonville bought 1,500 acres (540 hectares) of land north of town and developed it into what is now NorthPort Village. On May 21st, 1886 the first post office was opened in North Port with Wm Haines as the first Postmaster. In 1915 a new airport was built on I-95 east of town and renamed for then-Mayor Harry Laughlin (1901-1978). The name change came about because at that time only Miami-Dade County Airport had that type of designation and Laughlin felt that north Broward should have its own airport rather than justMiami-Dade Airport which handled most airport traffic. On November 25th, 1959 North Port became a independent municipality under state law when it merged with nearby Deerfield Beach and Parkland City forms one municipality known as Broward County Municipality No 2 or simply Broward County Municipality 2. At the time this merger happened the population of each municipality was 57,800 residents while their combined population size was 153,574 residents making them both second in Broward County after Palm Beach County . It wasn't until 1990 when county commissioners decided to change all municipal names back to their original form before they were added back intoBrowardCountyMunicipality2 following a referendum held by citizens on November 3rd 1990 . This decision followed county commissioners' deliberations over whether or not to add another city called Fort Lauderdale intoBoroughCountyMunicipality2 because Fort Lauderdale had become much more populous since 1960s while also having several significant business interests withinBoroughCountyMunicipality2 itself such asFortLauderdale Mall which opened in 1989 and made Fort Lauderdale an important retail center for South Florida . North Port, Florida is an unincorporated community located in the town of North Port on the Panhandle of Florida. It was founded by refugees from Cuba in 1892, and became a leading port for American goods during World War II. They organized themselves into two companies known as "La Carretera" (the road) and "L'Escalante". These colonists beganterming northward along Pensacola Bay before reaching what is now North Port on December 12th, 1825 when they reached land leased from Spanish Governor Josefina Borromeo by Captain Bartholomew Jones under terms that no white men be landed there without her permission; this landing also marked the end of Spanish control over Florida's Panhandle coastline southward from St Augustine. The first permanent European settler arrived at what is now NorthPort on December 12th, 1825 when Captain Bartholomew Jones landed his ship HMS Beagle off Penobscot Point on Pensacola Bay for trade purposes only; heading soon thereafter for Havana where he sold his cargo back to Capt Jones for £500 sterling .
