In 1898, North Port became a major naval base for the Spanish-American War when it was transferred from Key West, Florida. It saw much action along the Cuban coast before hostilities ended in 1898. After World War I, NorthPort experienced rapid growth as an important military and commercial hub in southeastern Florida. Numerous large corporations were based here including Upson Rubber Company and Ford Motor Company; both companies left after the war. The postwar years were difficult for Northport as its economy struggled with high unemployment rates and competition from nearby Miami Beach and Jacksonville. However, there have been recent efforts to revitalize this city through projects such as new housing developments, art galleries, and a new downtown district called "The Landing."
In 1892, the first North Port nursery was opened in what is now the Town of North Port. From its inception, the nursery offered fresh flowers and plants to residential and commercial customers in the town. The business closed in 1916, but reopened as a pet store in 1922. In 1951, the pet store became an annex of Waffle House which continues to operate today. The annex served as a lunchroom for employees of Waffle House until 1978 when it was demolished to make way for a new shopping center.
