North Port is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,546 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1884 by Isadore North and his wife Lucy. North is buried there. The first settlers were Captain John Haltom and his family who arrived in 1795. They built a log cabin on the edge of what is now known as downtown North Port. In 1884, Isadore North and Lucy founded the town on land they bought from Major James Cooksworth for $100. The town experienced growth through the early 20th century with businesses such as Journeys Clothing Store (founded 1912), Fidelity Loan National Bank (founded 1913), Coca-Cola Bottling Company (founded 1917), and Armour & Co., which manufactured guns and munitions until 1954. During World War I, Northport served as an airfield for American bombers bombing German cities; during the war it also became home to Naval Air Station Pensacola which operated fighter aircraft during World War II. After the war, many business failures led to its decline until it regained some economic stability in the 1970s when tourism began to grow among retirees from nearby Tallahassee and Gainesville
In 1892, the first north port on the Florida Keys was established. It was a small trading post with only a few stores and homes. The town quickly grew and by 1906 it had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1912, North Port became part of Miami-Dade County.
