North Palm Beach is part of the Palm Beach–Boca Raton–Fort Lauderdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. The City of North Palm Beach was formed on December 15, 1963 from parts of Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale. The area now known as North Palm Beach was first inhabited by Arawak Indians before Europeans arrived in the 16th century. Ostrovsky established a Russian fur trading post on what is now State Road 527 in 1763 and named it "North Palm Beach". In 1855, Avante Epps built a plantation here and named it "Epps Plantation". After Epps' death in 1881, his son Emanuel took over the property and renamed it "Epps Plantation & Estate", later changing the spelling to "North Palm Beach" in 1893. By 1910, there were thirty families living here with an aggregate population of 1,099 people; during World War II they increased their number to 3,000 because of V-J Day air raids that destroyed many homes and businesses within minutes of each other across town. In 1951 American Electric Power (AEP) constructed its first electricity plant west of Tampa Bay – then part of Cuba – at what is now milepost 331 on state road 95 north near Jacaranda Springs Wildlife Preserve; this site became AEP's world headquarters after Richardson Electric Company merged with AEP in 1956. As electricity production increased throughout South Central Florida through the decades AEP purchased large tracts adjoining North Palm Beach for development into electric communities: Milton Downs east of CR 520/State Road 95 1957-1960; Bellemere east off US 1 1959-1962; Deerfield 2030s 1965-1969; Boca Raton Twp./CR 527 1971; Coconut Creek 1946 bisecting present day CR 530/SR 95 1970s). Today North Palm Beach offers more than 230 acres (100 hectares) for housing developments: 125 acres (40 hectares) northeast along SR 95 from CR 520/SR 295 to US 1 / International Drive between FM 2713 and FM 2724 ; 100 acres (40 hectares) northwest along SR 295 from I-Drive to US 1 / International Drive between FM 2757 and 277 7 ; 25 acres (10 hectares) southwest cornerof I-Drive/FM 2757 just past intersection with SR 295 . These developments include several high rise buildings such as CenturyLink Tower which has been home to many prominent South Florida businesspeople including system presidents Cheryl Ladd Greer Malone[1]and Bob Parsons[2]. The city also developed two golf courses: Cypress National Golf Course located off State Road 2191 north about 10 miles outside the city limits while Champions course located off I-95 south about 8 miles outside city limits both open to public play since 1984 though most memberships are available only for residents or their guests who must have an invite from either club president or mayor
