Bullets have been a part of North Palm Beach, Florida’s history for over 100 years. The first bullets were fired in 1892 when a group of men banded together to protect themselves against Indians. Bullet holes can still be seen in some of the buildings in town today. In 1912, the first law enforcement officers were hired in North Palm Beach. This was because it was decided that violence would not solve any problems and people needed to be able to trust one another. The police department originally consisted of six officers and grew to twelve officers by 1928. Today, North Palm Beach has an active police department with thirty-six officers who patrol the streets day and night. Bullets are also part of our history as we celebrate Memorial Day each year on May 29th. This holiday is dedicated to all those who have given their lives for our country and our freedom. On this day, we remember the brave men and women who have made America great, whether they were serving in military or law enforcement roles. The area now known as North Palm Beach was first settled by Native Americans in the early 17th century. The first English settlers arrived in 1665, when Capt. John Smith and his group of pioneers journeyed up the River Styx from Newfoundland. They founded a small town called " palm beach" on the mouth of the Indian River, about two miles south of today's North Palm Beach. In 1824, Captain David Levy built a wharf at what is now downtown North Palm Beach and began trading with Indians and other Europeans for goods and slaves. He also developed an agricultural enterprise that produced fruits and vegetables for local Consumers Company stores. In 1827, Levy sold his interest in the company to Isaac Sloat, who named it Florida East Coast Railroad (FECR). FECR continued to operate as a railroad until 1912. In 1915, Mayor Hermann Goering designated North Palm Beach a city within the newly created city of Miami. At that time, there were only 6 people living in North Palm Beach; by 1920, there were over 90 residents! through many years of growth and development, North Palm Beach has come to be one of South Floridas most vibrant communities with its rich cultural heritage and vibrant nightlife!
