Ammunition first became available to soldiers in North Palm Beach in 1868 when Colonel James W. Cooke purchased a small lot on State Road 54 near today’s Atlantic Avenue. This lot would become known as Cooke Arsenal and would continue to supply ammunition to America until 1971. In 1896, Cannon Arms Company was founded by Captains John Aiken and Willis Swayne with the goal of making firearms easier for civilians to purchase and use. Today, Cannon Arms still exists as an ammo company with operations located throughout Florida. North Palm Beach has been a major center for Ammunition production since 1898 when Captain John Aiken founded Cannon Arms Company! His company continued producing ammunition until 1971 when they relocated their operations to Florida's Turnpike Capital District! The City of North Palm Beach is located on land that once comprised much larger tracts along Northwest First Street between Northeast First Street and Northwest Second Street in southwest Coral Gables-across Northeast Third Avenue to Northwest Fourth Street-northwest Everglades Boulevard to Northwest Seventh Avenue (now Suncoast Boulevard) which ran through downtown Coconut Grove-southwest Sunrise Highway to NW Eighth Avenue (now US 1). This area now comprises most of northeast Boca Raton including portions of Sunrise Highway northbound and southbound between NW Fifth Avenue (now US 1) and NW Eighth Avenue eastbound; parts of northwest Boynton Beach including portions of Sunrise Highway northbound and southbound between NW Fourth Avenue (now US 1) and NW Eighth Avenue eastbound; parts Of northeast Fort Pierce including portions of Sunrise Highway northbound and southbound betweenNW Eighth Ave(now US 1)andNW Ninth Ave.(Now State Road 806)); all except for about two miles WSW corner intersection with NE First St., now SW corner intersection with NE Second St., now SE corner intersection with NE Third Ave., now NNE corner intersection with NW First St., formerlySE corner intersection with SW Cornermeridian Dr.; all except for this lastexceptingabout two miles WSW corner intersectionwith NE First St., now SW cornerintersectionwith NE Second St., now SE cornerintersectionwith NE Third Ave., now NNE cornerintersectionwith NW FirstSt., formerlySE Corner Intersection WithNW Cornermeridian Dr.; heretofore known as Government Hill ; but annexation by thencityof North Lauderdale made this hill official location In addition to these large tracts there were many smaller ones also situated within or near present day cities: Indian Wells , Deerfield Terrace , Weston Park Village , Cutler Bay Village .
