North Miami is located on Biscayne Bay and bordered by Everglades National Park to the east and south, Key Largo to the north, and Jupiter to the west. The original name for North Miami was " Eldorado" because it was then one of the most prosperous areas in South Florida. In 1888 Julius Rosenwald donated land adjacent to today's Northeast 7th Street and Eighth Avenue for what would become NorthMiami High School; today's Rosenwald School building stands on that property as well. In 1903 Ayer Company president Alfred Ely made a grant of land along Biscayne Boulevard between NE 7th Street and NW 8th Avenue for what would become Coral Gables Elementary School; that school still stands today on Northeast 6th Avenue across from CoralGables Mall). In 1909 developer George Brown announced plans for a new city center in downtown NorthMiami which he called "Biltmore". However this plan never progressed beyond concept because of World War I-related financial difficulties within Broadway Properties Incorporated (Brown's holding company) which had been formed as an arm of his father-in-law Cornelius Vanderbilt IV's shipping interests empire after William Randolph Hearst bought out Brown's interest in 1924. In 1925 banker/developer Harry Jaffe purchased Broadway Properties Incorporated from Brown with the intent of developing it into a major housing development called "Morningside Heights". However Jaffe soon ran into financial problems due to overbuilding and missed deadlines for both Morningside Heights' construction beginning in 1928 and finishing by 1929; so much so that Atlantic City businessman Morris Kallenberger took over Jaffe's struggling company renamed it Kallenberger Development Corporation (KDC), started development on Morningside Heights again but lost money every month until 1931 when he sold it back to Brown who became sole owner once more - this time under his new name - Broward Properties Company Limited (BPCL). BPCL continued developing Morningside Heights until its closure in 1974 by newly appointed Mayor Annette Zimmermann because she felt its high rates were creating public nuisance during rush hours. The site now forms part of Coral Gables mall complex known as Greenway Plaza Shopping Center which opened retail operations there in 1986 following years of planning by developers including Singer & Schulte Co., American Realty Advisors LP, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt & Company LLP (HMHCO) and local real estate firm Watson Coleman PCLHFFL despite attempts by Zimmermann to keep KDC operating as an independent business through her office until its closure two years later amidst mounting debt issues A year earlier than scheduled Zimmermann had won re-election against incumbent John Fenton whom she successfully opposed with promises not to reopen KDC although she herself did not own any shares therein) - setting off another round of redevelopment efforts led by Ziegler himself culminating with completion four years later of Plantation Drive south of UFOSWYNNE Road near Pembroke Pines Golf Club with mixed use buildings occupied primarily by condominiums while other businesses remain vacant or used only intermittently

The first permanent European settlers of what is now North Miami were French people who landed on an island near present-day Coral Gables in 1795. They named their new settlement "Marie-Antoinette" after Empress Josephine of France, since they could not find any other English terms that would fit the site's natural features. In 1802, Spanish colonists arrived and renamed their new settlement "Tenerife". The name stuck for many years until 1830 when explorer Carlos Castilla discovered an uninhabited cape adjacent to present-day NorthMiami and decided to name it Castilla Point after his father Gaspar de Portocarrero y Cepeda, governor of Cuba during that period. In 1835, one year before Fort Pierce was founded as a result of Ulysses S. Grant's purchase of land from Florida Native American leaders under Treaty 7 (1835), Captain John Armstrong founded Indianola Landing on Tenerife Point as part of his explorations along both coasts of South America. The area now known as North Miami was first settled by the Tequesta Indians in the mid-1700s. The area was taken over by Spanish explorers in 1795, and became part of Santo Domingo after the American Revolutionary War. In 1821, Miami County was created from parts of Miami and Broward counties, and North Miami became a part of it. The town of Miami Beach was established in 1926, and NorthMiami proper was annexed into that city in 1957.
