In 1795 José de Argüello y Aragón founded Fort Naranjo on present day NE 2nd Ave in what is now North Miami Beach; it served as a Spanish military post until 1821 when it was abandoned due to Seminole Indian attacks. In 1835 Joseph Hennepin arrived with his party of fur traders at Ft Myers and established trading post at what is now NW 7th St; he called it Hennepin's Center because he had been sent there by President James K. Polk on February 3, 1835 as part of a policy designed to open up Florida land for colonization by Americans. On November 14, 1840 Nicholas Negros y Valdez foundednegrosville on NW 25th St in what is now Overtown; this settlement formed the border between Everglades National Park and Broward County until 1959 when they were merged into Broward County. In 1861 Jacksonville hurricane destroyed most of Ft Myers so timber operators began coming here looking for wood; commerce grew rapidly thanks to these new arrivals who soon erected many fine buildings including Government House (now Coral Gables). In 1893 Henry Flagler organized Atlantic Coast Navigation Company which built one of world's largest steamboats – SS "Florida"; she left New York City for Key West on November 16th carrying passengers and cargo over Lake Okeechobee Headsland en route from Tampa Bay to Cuba via Mobile Bay then Pensacola before arriving at Naples September 4th having traversed an average distance of 366 miles per day! She carried over 1 million passengers over her career before being scrapped in 1947 off Daytona Beach! An additional reason why Key West became known as "Flagler City" wasdue to John F Kennedy's visit there during his presidential campaign July 26-29, 1960 aboard USS Constitution which docked therefor for nine days while JFK toured local businesses and visited Naval Air Station Miramar where he flew supersonic aircraft!. This made Flagler one of only two presidents everto have visitedMiramar! The other president was Ulysses S Grant who did so in 1912! From here JFK took deliveryof his last plane–the Boeing 747—and flew back home from Key West aboard that same plane! After visiting Miramar JFK went ashore where he met Governor Reuben Wilcox who presented him with a key ring created specifically for JFK—it still remains today! After visiting Miramas JFK returned onboard Constitution wherehe remained until Augsburg Reach reopened following Hurricane Irma! He then boarded another plane headed back home across Tampa Bay but this time without stopping at Miramar!! So ends another chapter in our History……..northMiami
