It was in the early morning of November 4, 1984 that a group of gunmen stormed into the Softgun Shop located at 3015 NW 95th Street in North Miami, Florida. The gunmen were looking for employees who had earlier gone to work on their personal firearms. One gunman shot and killed the store's owner, Gerald Fenton, before taking hostages inside. Ten people were taken hostage including four children; three adults were also held at gunpoint. The softgun shop's owners and employees fought back with barricades and pepper spray until police arrived. Most of the hostages survived but one child was fatally shot by one of the gunmen. Eleven people were arrested during this siege including five suspects who later pleaded guilty to murder charges. In 1978 an annexation took place which brought much needed housing development specifically for African Americans into what had been a white suburb until then including portions of Overtown that had been zoned for whites only until then. The annexations led directly to many crime problems caused by gangs taking advantage of newly available resources such as new schools and police force training areas specifically designed for their activities instead of solving longstanding crimes committed against black residents before then or afterward
