In the 1940s, North Miami was a heavily populated area with a large concentration of African Americans. The neighborhood was also known for its nightclubs and nightlife. In the late 1960s, after several waves of social unrest and riots that took place in Miami metropolitan areas, North Miami became one of the most volatile neighborhoods in South Florida. The violence increased during the early 1970s as a result of growing poverty and unemployment rates among black residents. In March 1971, firefighters responded to an exploding gas can in North Miami after receiving reports of people fighting over it. Three days later, fifty-eight-year old Julius Jones was shot and killed by two white men as he walked to buy some water from a store on Northwest 22nd Street. The murders reignited racial tensions in the neighborhood and led to increasing patrols by police officers looking for suspects. Two years later, on December 5, 1973, four African American teenagers were shot dead by white supremacists who thought they were being watched at a nearby park. This tragedy further stoked community tensions and provoked protests against racism throughout South Florida. On December 15th multiple units of police response arrived at the scene but no arrests were made due to heavy crowding at the scene which led toε public outcry
