North Miami is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. Ewell ordered his troops to burn down all buildings within two blocks of Yankee forces encampment at Fort Lauderdale Landing on May 25th 1861. This event would become known as "the Burning of Jacksonville". In 1865, part of what became North Miami was annexed intobroward county as part of organized Broward County government. On December 12th 1888 when annexation occurred it formed part of newly created unincorporated northern parts OfBroward County which still exists today as Everglades National Park

The area was first inhabited by the Timucua people, who were known for their hunting and fishing activities in the region. The land that now makes up North Miami was first owned by Capt. John Stroud, who built his house on what is now Northwest First Street in 1824. In 1828, Capt. John Stroud's son-in-law, Nathaniel Woodruff purchased 640 acres of land from the Timucua people and named it "North Miami." Over time, other families also bought or donated property to North Miami and its residents began enjoying access to natural resources such as freshwater springs and salt water marshes. In 1915, when Douglas MacArthur became commander of American Forces in Europe during World War I, he decided to make North Miami his headquarters. After being appointed Commanding General of all American forces in Europe (the only U.S. general ever given this task), MacArthur made North Miami his base of operations and initiated many important advances for the city such as constructing a new public works department including a harbor system and new schools. In 1921, after years of planning and construction work at various locations around town (including nearby PembrokePines), Fort Lauderdale was incorporated as a city within Monroe County under then-Mayor Hernando Bienville’s leadership. The late 1800s saw an influx of Spanishelle immigrants into South Florida because of farm labor opportunities available in Cuba during that time period; these immigrants brought with them some traditional Hispanic culture which lasted until well into the 1940s when most Cuban Americans left South Florida for good due to political changes stemming from Fidel Castro's takeover of Cuba in 1959). As part of Mexican immigration law at that time only citizens who could prove they had resided continuously in Mexico since January 1st 1870 were allowed entry into South Florida; however, many Hispanics living south of Interstate 95 entered throughna Port Everglades without proper documentation or documentation at all (such as birth certificates). This resulted in a large number of Spanishelle individuals coming downstate after having left Havana for economic reasons (such as sheer boredom) rather than following through with their promised citizenship process; consequently many undocumented Spanishelle residents ended up moving into areas such as Coral Gables (northwest Broward County) where they continued practicing their Hispanic customs even though they no longer had legal rights to do so according to official Mexican government policy at that time.
