Godfrey with the name of their farm North Miami Heights. At first most of the land in what is now North Miami was used for citrus production and until 1925 there were no schools within town limits or even within a half-mile of it; all education occurred outside of town and until 1972 only private schools could offer pre-kindergarten through 8th grade services in town boundaries. On October 10, 1912 North Miami Heights incorporated as a city with its own government under the name "North Miami". On December 15, 1914 incorporation of neighboring unincorporated communities Boca Raton and Pompano Beach followed suit making NorthMiami an official city with its own police department and fire department as well as taxing power over these areas which would continue to be exercised by village governments until 1973 when annexation became effective for both municipalities forming one municipality under state law The first mayor was Wm Gifford from 1922 to 1926 while Arapaho Road ran through downtown which made it difficult for residents to get around without getting lost In 1932 two hurricanes destroyed much of Fort Myers so muchso that many people left for North Miami during the storm On January 1, 1933 Northwest Florida Electric Cooperative (NWFEC) became operational providing electricity to all south Broward County except South Kendall who received their electricity from WPBF who had been operating since 1928 before NWFEC came into being In 1945 US Army troops arrived in northern Broward County after World War II ended creating an expanding military presence in south Florida In 1947 US Air Force troops arrived following Operation Crossroads which resulted in increased development around Homestead Airport including new housing developments near Everglades Park
