North Miami is a city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 68,695. North Miami is the largest and most populous city in the county and one of its two cities. The other city is Doral. The site where North Miami now stands was first inhabited by barksaw makers and their families in the early 1800s. They came to this area from various parts of South Florida. The name "North Miami" was given to this area by General James Kenedy who had commandeered a boatload of refugees from Cuba during the American Revolution and named them after his home town of Naples, Italy. He also made reference to an Indian village that he had passed through on his way to Tampa Bay. At one time there were more than 100 businesses in North Miami alone; many involved metalworking such as foundries, smiths, and hingesmiths (a type of clock). In 1875 the first steel plant was built near here by Jno Atherton & Sons at what is now Northwest Third Street and First Avenue NE. At that time it became apparent that steel production would become an important aspect of local economy asMiami grew larger and more industrialized; thereafter Steel production began moving away from North Miami towards Kendall/Broward County becoming increasingly reliable due to better transportation links within those counties as well as closer access to resources like coalitions for processing raw materials into finished products (the so-called “ Pittsburgh Model”). In recent years though some high-level industry has continued operations with significant job losses associated with Hurricane Irma which occurred in September 2017; however much economic activity still takes place around tourism including food services (restaurants), retail stores (mall complexes), construction services (homes) etc., providing jobs for locals while protecting critical infrastructure which will be impacted by future natural disasters

North Miami was founded by Englishman John Chapman in 1838. The community developed as a small town, with businesses and residences located along the banks of the Miami River. By 1890, North Miami had reached its peak population size, with over 10,000 residents. However, during the 1920s and 1930s, NorthMiami experienced significant growth and decline due to various factors including racial discrimination and economic recession. In 1954, following the United States’ entry into World War II, NorthMiami became part of the newly formed city of Miami Beach.
