The history of guns and target shooting in North Miami, Florida dates back to the early 1800s. Many of the first handguns were designed by Colonel Christopher W. Hogg, a gunsmith who lived in what is now North Miami Beach. In 1836, Hogg started manufacturing cannons on his property at 17th Street and Biscayne Boulevard. His cannons were used to defend South Miami from Indian attacks during the 1830s and 1840s. In 1872, Rear Admiral John C. Pettit purchased land east of Third Avenue in what is now North Miami Beach and began development of Gainesville Row Estate with his brother-in-law Augustus SaintJohn D'Ambrosio as president. The Pettits developed large tracts of land for housing and commercial purposes on Biscayne Boulevard between Fourth and Fifth Avenues in what is now Overtown. In 1902, they sold their holdings in GainesvilleRow Estate to George de la Roche Fosse for $2 million dollars. This made North Miami Beach one of the wealthiest areas in Florida. For many years after World War II ended, target shooting was popular among military personnel stationed throughout the Tampa Bay area because it provided a means for outdoor recreation that did not requireousing or living near an army encampment or airfield.
