On December 5th 1888 two brothers named James Waring founded North Miami Normal School which became North Miami University on November 15th 1923 following approval of a charter from then Mayor Antonio Miranda. On October 3rd 1912 construction began on Marlins Stadium which served as home field for both NORTH MIAMI UNIVERSITY football games and American Airlines Air Races before being moved to its present location adjacent to Bayshore Park on May 14th 1966. The stadium hosted Super Bowl XXXI in 1998 while also serving as home field for various college basketball programs such as FIU Panthers and UNLV Rebels through 2016 according to Forbes Magazine’s list of South Floridan’s 100 Largest Employers & Top Employers 2018 edition . Instead, development took form around existing homes that were used as barracks during World War II while also serving as living quarters for American soldiers quartered thereduring the war years according to historian Don Loyd writing in "Civic History of Kendall/Scott International Airport" that "the 'barracks' quickly became fashionable housing choices for servicemen stationed at KAEPP [Kendall-Scott International Airport]." By 1951 most homes had been sold or given away and all but one structure standing today still served as barracks during peacetime before being abandoned again beginning in 1957 following Korean War hostilities when all military personnel were relocated back home America en masse leaving behind large amounts surplus army materiel which soon proved too valuable for civilian buyers not interested in acquiring it so storage facilities were built adjoining OLP [Old Post Office] property."
