North Miami, Florida was founded on December 12, 1835 by a group of Englishmen who were looking for a place to build a new home. The town was named after the then-university town of Northampton in England. The first residents of North Miami settled along the banks of the Kissimmee River and built breezy cottages and log homes. By 1839, North Miami had a population of about 150 people. In 1861, following the American Civil War, North Miami was transferred from Florida to Alabama as part of the Compromise Of 1850. In 1867, it became part of Jacksonville County and in 1898 it became an incorporated municipality under the name "North Miami." On November 21, 1916, South Miami Beach annexed NorthMiami into its jurisdiction. On January 1st, 1959, SouthMiami Beach dissolved its annexation with NorthMiami and returned to its original form as an unincorporated community called "South Miami Beach." The cityscape today is largely unchanged since when it was founded over 100 years ago. While there have been some changes - most notably in terms of housing developments - most aspects of life remain much the same nearly two centuries later. One such aspect is that many locals still refer to their hometown as "North Miami."

Polk made a treaty with the Seminoles and gave them land in what is now North Miami Beach. The first European to explore this area was Alonso de Portocarrero, who sighted sandbars and heard reports of rich resources here in 1763. It wasn't until 1824 that Spanish scout Antonio López landed here on his way to Cuba. He reported seeing an excellent harbour at Biscayne Bay and named it after Manuel Prudente Pinel, a Spanish nobleman who had helped him find this harbour. From Biscayne Bay, Portocarrero explored various coasts of South America before returning home in 1768. After his return trip, he named this part of South Florida San Miguel County after Don Miguel Sanchez y Girona - one of his companions on his voyage!
