In 1909 developer George Gifford bought 160 acres (68 hectares) on what is now NE 2nd Street in what was then known as North Miami Beach proper. At that time there were only a few homes and no industry other than farming until Gifford began developing Doral Lakes into one of South Florida's most popular resorts with his theme park called Floridian Highlands in 1941 which later became Walt Disney World . Nearby he built Pleasure Island Ferry Terminal which facilitated access to both channels for guests using their boat or jetskiing/kayaking trips from Doral Lakes amusement park across Kissimmee Lake while they visited Disney World . One can walk or drive along today's NE 2nd Street between Gifford Avenue and NW 7th Avenue where Floridian Highlands once stood before being demolished in 2003; today you will find an extensive shopping mall including Bloomingdale's department store next door as well as several restaurants including PGA Tour Champions' Atlantis Golf Course,, IRS Service Center., , 24 Hour Fitness., DaVinci Pizza., Dunkin Donuts., Macy's Department Store.. North Miami Beach, Florida is a municipality in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 31,858 at the 2010 census. It is located on the west side of the county and borders Biscayne Bay to the south and east; it contains portions of both South Miami Beach and Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. The area that would become NorthMiami Beach was first settled by Everglades Indians in the early 18th century. In 1834, Captain John C. Post of packet boat "Cimarron", sailing from Havana through this area, observed a stretch of shoreline then known as "the Gut" extending into Biscayne Bay. He called it "South Miami Beach". The name stuck and when he left for Havana in 1850 his boat's crew dropped anchor at what became NorthMiami Beach on November 5th off Biscayne Boulevard. In 1909 Jacksonville developer Hialeah Jethro Gibbs purchased land adjoining Post's grant for $2,500 from General Philip Sheridan who had acquired it during Indian War conflict with Spain. On January 4th 1910 Gibbs submitted plans to Jacksonville City Commissioners for a planned community called Jacksonville Landing which would include 106 homes including 24 flats or townhouses set back from Grand Avenue between Second Street east to Third Street north along Flagler Drive and Seventh Street west across First Street to Eighth Street (now Euclid Avenue). Originally named Key West after Spanish captain Alonso de la Vega who had discovered Key West four years earlier while searching for sugarcane near present day Hollywood Boulevard/Broadway in Hollywood Hills), the landing was renamed NorthMiami beach after Mayor Manuel Diaz Herrera on December 16th 1916 upon request of Mrs Anna Ponce de Leon about newly developed land near Big Harbour – now downtown – north of where US 1 crossed Lantana River Bridge.. The first house sold in Jacksonville Landing was that Lots 10 & 11 NW corner 3rd St., built by Mrs Fannie Sprague Maynard soon after its opening on October 15th 1911..
