North Miami Beach, Florida is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. North Miami Beach is bordered by Biscayne Bay to the northwest and west, Kendall Boulevard to the north and east, Roosevelt Roads to the south and southeast, and Lighthouse Point to the southwest. The area now known as NorthMiami Beach was first settled by Indian Americans in 1871. The community name may be derived from "north" because it was located on what was then known as "the north side" of Biscayne Bay. In 1912 most of what is now NorthMiami Beach were annexed by Fort Lauderdale; however, some sections (such as Northwest Third Street) remain unincorporated today. The first post office in North Miami Beach opened in 1872. In 1914 a gas station/locker company called Gas White attracted local residents with its promises of free gasoline until 1942 when World War II began; however, this business failed within a year due to high demand for gasoline during wartime shortages. In 1948 North Miami Beach incorporated as a city under the name of Port Washington which at that time extended from Northwest Third Street NE up through present-day Overtown and past MetroCentre into Broward County proper before terminating at Pompano Causeway on Boca Raton Boulevard just east of I-95K exit 9A (then US 1). That same year saw construction begin on what would become South Park Mall which anchored both sides of State Road 27 across from today's Art Deco SouthPark Center mall building across SW 2nd St., also home to Sunoco Logistics garage facilities until their closure in 2013 prior to reopening as Residence Inn Americas earlier this year - making it once again one large shopping center with several dozen smaller businesses surrounding it dating back to its original anchors: two banks - First National Bank & Trust Co.(now JPMorgan Chase) and Second National Bank - were joined shortly afterwards by Sears Roebuck & Co.(now Kmart), JBL Radio(later HSN Broadcasting) and eventually additional anchor stores over time including Federated Department Stores(later Macy's), Lowe's Electronics(later Home Depot), Sears Outfitters(later Menards), Kohl's department store before Federated itself merged with Radian Group (formerly Wacoal Inc.) forming Federated Retail Holdings plc., currently one largest retail chain in America comprising more than 400 stores nationwide including 15 flagship locations plus six affiliated stores in Canada[1] . On December 3rd 1986 Mayor Edwin Meese III announced plans for an all-new shopping complex overlooking Sunrise Park Drive extending down towards Key Biscayne Boulevard that would include major retailers such as Sears Roebuck & Co., JBL Radio, Kmart Corporation and Federated Department Stores along with other commercial tenants including Atlantic City Casino Corp./MGM Mirage Resort Casino/Atlantic City Hilton Hotel/Allied Landings Shopping Center[2]. This project never came close to fruition but generated significant interest among developers who continue To this day pursue various redevelopment plans for key neighborhoods near Sunrise Park Drive such as Overtown / Midtown / Lincoln Rd., East Village / Delray Ave., etc... Today much remains unchanged save for occasional vandalism or strict liberal zoning regulations which have effectively stopped any further development since 2008 when developer Yucaipa Partners purchased rights adjacent property formerly used by AIG Financial Services upon their acquisition of Merrill Lynch parent company AIGUSA[3]. despite numerous requests made via email,[4], phone[5], [6] *and even written correspondence* directly from city officials... conditions remaining thus unregulated&unenlightened make development nearly impossible without intervention

North Miami Beach is a census-designated place (CDP) in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 54,827 at the 2010 census. North Miami Beach is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is also included in the Orlando-Kissimmee-Doheny Micropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up North Miami Beach was originally named "Opaqua" and was an alluvial flatland on the mouth of Dania Creek. A post office called Opaqua was established in 1892, and remained in operation until it closed in 1954. In 1896, developer John Ladd donated to the town of NorthMiami Beach over $1,000 for a lighthouse and beachfront park. The first lighthouse on what would become North Miami Beach was built by Captains Julius Eichler and Augustus Herrmann on property they purchased from Swedish immigrant Rasmus Sohlgren in 1898. The lighthouse operated continuously until 1916 when it was replaced by a new lighthouse built by Captains Rudolph Koppel and Hugo Wegener with assistance from members of the American Legion Auxiliary detachment stationed at Fort Myers Naval Station nearby. The current structure - designed by architects Nelson Pate and Edward Bennett - stands as one of South Florida's most recognizable landmarks; it has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978. During World War II, damage caused by bombing raids did extensive damage to both structures with only minor repairs being made for many years afterwards; however, following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 8th 1941 all significant repairs were made including replacement windows throughout both lighthouses immediately prior to their reopening on January 3rd 1942 which marked a new era for these two important assets within our community during wartime times! After World War II there were efforts to bring back active patrols around these two iconic landmarks but due to budgetary constraints this never happened unfortunately! However during my time living here I have had numerous opportunities to watch Naval Officers perform their duties inside or outside of these beautiful structures every day! Some don't get enough credit! These are some great memories that I share everyday with my family and friends who live near me here!"
