North Miami Beach is part of Broward County and is bordered by South Miami to the south, Boca Raton to the east, and Dania Beach to the north. The oldest continuously inhabited area in North Miami Beach was called "Tamarac" and it may have been derived from Tamanaki which means 'place where trees grow'. In 1828, Captain John Waymouth sold land in what is now North Miami Beach to General James Wilkinson who built Fort Wilkinson on it in 1829. After being abandoned for several years, Fort Wilkinson was reactivated in 1861 by General Andrew Johnson as an arsenal for Stanton's War Department. It became known as Fort Lauderdale after United States Senator William Houstoun (D-FL) gave $10,000 towards its construction. In 1899, Drury Lane Boulevard was laid out through present day Northwest Miami Beach along with other streets such as Northwest Fourth Street and Northwest Eighth Street. This development including a large shopping mall were done because of concerns about open water flooding that were then common during hurricanes. The first phase of this development opened in 1901 with 120 stores and included six blocks between Flagler Drive and Military Road NW. In 1935, when Coral Gables became a municipality it annexed much of what is now NorthMiamiBeach into its municipal boundaries making it one town within two towns configuration - similar to that used today by many cities throughout the United States including Tallahassee (Florida), Jacksonville (Florida), Memphis (Tennessee), Omaha ( Nebraska), Wichita Falls ( Texas) etc... One major difference between NorthMiamiBeach City and most municipalities today is that until 1957 all elections were held using closed ballots rather than open voting which allowed more candidates running for office while protecting political parties from too much competition; however this practice changed when both Mayor Buddy Dyer (D-Fla.) and City Councilmember Harry Meeks successfully lobbied for an election system allowing open voting which they termed 'the fair way'. It wasn't until voters approved Measure JL-1 in November 1958 that citizens finally had their say on how their municipality should be run; however mayor Buddy Dyer would continue to use his veto power over budget items until he resigned effective January 1st 1959 citing health issues.... On July 21st 1959 Hurricane Forster hit South Florida causing extensive damage across Broward County including parts of NorthMiamiBeach; however little did anyone know just how bad things would get especially since hurricane season usually runs from September through December...On October 5th 1959 Hurricane Floyd struck our area causing catastrophic damage across most of SouthFlorida killing over seventy people primarily due to roofing failures caused during Floyd...Aftermath: More than $100 million worth of damage had been done or was expected with around thirty thousand homes lost or destroyed.....By early 1960 almost eighty percent of all property within city limits had been damaged or lost.......................................As a result Hurricane Floyd left behind more than 6000 homeless families living without electricity or running water for weeks..........NorthMiamiBeach would not reach its current level of prosperity until 1994 when businessman Donald Trump purchased most assets surrounding his mansion at 4362 Collins Avenue from Mr Farragutus.........................Today there are nearly 4000 businesses operating within city limits employing more than 50% local employment......................................Mayor Buddy Dyer's tenure saw some significant growth such as annexing Coral Gables' portion into town boundaries making it one municipality within two municipalities configuration..............Donald Trump would leave office in 2020 after winning re-election against incumbent Kennedy Perot.......................Since 2000 there has been an ongoing effort led by Mayor Taliaferro to redevelop portions zoned A/B commercial uses only subject to building permits.........................................................................Today many residents refer to themselves as 'Sunni Turks' due tot he high concentration Islamic population located near downtown...............................The economy has slowly beganto rebound but still faces many challenges such as low wages & few job opportunities...........Most recently there has been discussion about turning Nordmiami beach into a protected waterspace providing various benefits such as dredging resources & creating new amenities like bike paths

North Miami Beach is a census-designated place (CDP) in Broward County, Florida, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 30,836. The CDP includes the towns of Boca Raton and Coral Gables. It stretches along the ocean on the west side of Ft. Lauderdale–Miami International Airport to Homestead on the east side of runway 11L/27R. The area now known as North Miami Beach was first settled by Native Americans in early 16th century Arawak people. In 1763, Captain John Stennis landed at Fort Lauderdale on schedule for his Tour de France but experienced a hurricane that killed over 60% of his crew including himself and many natives before he could reach New Orleans. This event is sometimes cited as starting South Miami Beach's growth as an agricultural center because it meant new land had been opened up for farming after being abandoned by white settlers who fled during hurricanes such as Santo Domingo and Cuba's Hurricane Daya in 1835-36. In 1892, James Pogue bought 1/2 acres (0.20 km²) from philanthropist Jens Jensen for $5 and founded Jens Pogue & Co., which became one of America's oldest boatbuilders and dealers in marine supplies and equipment; its headquarters still remain at 5500 NW First Ave., Suite 3504 today). In 1902, Pogue donated 3 acres (1 ha) tobroward county for use as a public park following passage of a bill creating Broward County by then-Governor Manuel López Colón; it became Coconut Grove Park on November 14, 1902. On December 12th 1903 local developer Elisha Swayne purchased 2/3 interest in Pogue's gift from banker Sidney Sherman for $325 cash plus 10% interest payable annually until eventually acquired by the city government when it annexed part of Broward County in 1928; this made North Miami Beach an official city withinbroward county – though unincorporated since its creation – although much like today zoning laws are not followed exactly here since most development takes place outside OFHCR areas which are generally more lenient thanBroward County zoning ordinances allow typically In 1935 North Miami Beach annexed part of neighbouring Boca Raton which had recently become speed limits were instituted between those two municipalities due to concerns about potential collisions between cars travelling through both communities during high volumes timespan events such as holidays or major events at either town center mall or airports nearby In 1955 North Miami Beach annexed south Highwood Village which also contains some shopping centres including one now owned by Macy's Incorporated Since annexation all densities have increased significantly with heavy housing construction taking place near I-95 motorway exit off NW First Ave just northStadium Drive offers views out to ocean access directly across street from luxury Residences @ STADIUM DRIVE home prices range from $$200K -$$$$$$ million dollars Many top level jobs have been created here such as CEO positions with large corporations like JPMorgan Chase etc... even president levels have been achieved...This area has always been known for its beautiful beaches but recent years there has been a lot going on inside too
