The first Native Americans to inhabit what is now North Lauderdale were Tequesta Indians who lived along both banks of the Lane River in present day Plantation Heights and Sunrise before moving westward in search of new land to live on after their leaderless tribe was displaced by Spanish colonists in 1536. In 1802, Captain James Cook discovered Islamorada (later known as Key West) off Jupiter Inlet when his British ship HMS " Discovery" sailed past during his circumnavigation of the world and he named it for Governor David Barron who had sent him there as a scout. In 1886 developer Jules de la Bretonne developed a citrus plantation called La Bretonne near what is now Northwest 6th Street and Northwest Airmont Avenue NW., north of where current day Gantt Road meets I-10 southbound lanes east of Fort Myers Regional Parkway/SR 706 interchange.
