Another group purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) just south of current-day Midtown Boulevard in 1870 for $5 per acre (2,000 m²). In 1914 developers bought 1,500 acres (500 hectares), including present-day Midtown Boulevard, for $1 per acre (4 m²). This area became known as Miracle Mile because it had everything from grocery stores and movie theaters to hotels and shopping malls. Development continued until 1973 when Hurricane Donna caused extensive damage to town center buildings and killed more than 100 people; this left behind an empty downtown area that has been slowly redeveloped ever since. The city's economy depends heavily on its service sector with industry accounting for only about 10% of the city's employment base today but it still offers plenty of opportunities for businesses within its limits. However, as development increased along Sunrise Highway and other arterial streets throughout the township, North Lauderdale began to grow rapidly with more than 100 housing units being built between 1960 and 1974 alone! After years of growth and progress within the Township, on November 3rd, 1984 amendments were made to the Township charter which created a Board Of Trustees to manage day-to-day affairs within the municipality while also providing for future expansion into neighboring communities such as Lauderhill (north) or Plantation (south). The Township has since grown exponentially with over 1K residents now living in this thriving community!
