Gun targets have been a popular pastime in North Lauderdale, Florida for many years. The first target was erected at the corner of Hawthorne Avenue and US-1 in 1911. It was a 20 inch by 24 inch piece of wood with a five hole clock face on it. In 1945, the city council voted to erect a 30 inch by 40 inch target at parks and playgrounds. A second 30 inch by 40 inch target was erected in 1966 at the intersection of North Broward Boulevard and Northwest Second Street. The third target was erected in 1978 at the intersection of Northwest Second Street and Hawthorne Avenue. In 1984, a 50-inch by 60-inch target became available for purchase from Gander Mountain Sporting Goods Company. Since then, there have been numerous additions to the Gun Target Museum located inside of Pompano Beach City Hall on Sunrise Boulevard near State Road 806. These include an 18-inch by 24-inch cottonwood tree trunk as well as 10-, 12-, 15-, 20-, 25-, 30-, 36- or 42-inch steel targets dating back to the early 1800s. The Gun Target Museum is open daily 9:00am to 5:00pm from Memorial Day through Labor Day; closed Christmas Eve and New Year's Day. Admission is free! In the early 1800s, North Lauderdale was a small town in Broward County, Florida. It was called "Nova Londrina" after a British naval ship that sank in 1814. In 1868, it became part of Miami-Dade County and in 1924 it became part of Broward County.
North Lauderdale is a city located in Broward County, Florida, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,568. The area that now makes up North Lauderdale was originally part of South Miami Beach. North Lauderdale became a separate municipality on December 15, 1916. The heart of this town is its shopping district known as Midtown and bounded by Northwest 10th Street to the north and Northwest First Avenue to the south and east. Midtown also includes several high-end restaurants and nightclubs such as Tao Chinese Bistro (formerly Zanzibar), The Ritz Carlton Hotel & Casino, Mandarin Oriental Hotel & Casino, The Hawthorne Place Mall, and The Club at Pompano Beach. To the west of Midtown are residential districts which include Hollandale to the north and Coconut Creek to the south; these areas were once primarily agricultural until recent years when they have seen a resurgence in development as homes for wealthy people seeking privacy or easy access to entertainment options. Topping off what used to be Midtown are two large parks: North Park annexed from Worth Island in 1928 as part of zoning changes designed to encourage development around Lake Worth Resort; Roosevelt Boulevard forms an eastern border with Sunrise Gardens just beyond that neighborhood's borders while Parkland Drive runs along both sides of Lake Worth Boulevard between Sunrise Gardens and Plantation Point before joining it again near Plantation Point Golf Course

The area now known as North Lauderdale was first settled by the Seminoles in the early 18th century. The first European to come to this area was Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon, who landed on May 25, 1513, near what is now Fort Lauderdale. The Apalachicola Indians were the first Native Americans to live in this region and hunted deer and ibex from their hilltops. In 1794, a land grant was made to José Félix Fernández de Santa Anna for his Rancho Viejo which covered present-day North Lauderdale and parts of Broward County. By 1820, there were over 100 families living in North Lauderdale. By 1829, all of South Florida had been organized into counties and the name of North Lauderdale county was changed toBroward County after General James Esterhazy purchased the land from the Apalachicola Indian tribe for $1 million. In 1856, Broward County became part of Florida statehood and North Lauderdale became part of its First District. On November 3rd, 1907 Hurricane Andrew caused extensive damage to much of Broward County including Fort Lauderdale; however no casualties or loss of life occurred as a result of Andrew. On December 6th, 2008 a tornado touched down in Parkland Heights after touching down just south of Duval County line; it killed one person and injured several others before dissipating about a mile away east-northeast of Boca Raton Airport.
