North Lauderdale, Florida is a city located in Broward County, Florida. As of the 2010 census, the population was 18,553. North Lauderdale is the county seat and largest city of Broward County. The current mayor is Mayor Carlos Gimenez. The area that now makes up North Lauderdale was first settled by African Americans in the early 1800s as part of what is now Fort Lauderdale. A slave-owning white family named Hendricks purchased land in 1819 near present day Glades Road and Sunrise Boulevard for $1,000 cash. In 1892 a group of Dutch Immigrants arrived from Rotterdam with their families and founded what would become Sunrise Golf & Country Club onland between Northwest 11th Street and Sunrise Boulevard at what are now Worth Avenue and Avenue G (now NCPAC Drive). The golf course still stands today as one of South Florida's most successful golf courses with over 6,000 players each year playing nine holes including par 3s that reach , giving it its nickname "The Big Apple". In 1915 developer John Hickey bought 1/3 interest in Sunrise Golf & Country Club from Dutchman Cornelius Vanderbilt Vanderlip for $425 per share which he grew into an empire that included North Lauderdale's first grocery store – V&J Grocery – prominent real estate development including 5 east-west avenues built to specifications by McKim, Mead & White before they merged with JDS Uniphase in 1961; volleyball courts built by Professional Volleyball Professionals; Boca Raton's first movie theater – First National - opened on May 8th 1923 - serving as both home base for vaudeville shows then expanding to serve more than 2 dozen theaters across Palm Beach County before closing on December 15th 1966 after 16 years; later known as Regal Coral Gables Cinemas; original Everglades Hotel burned down on January 12th 1948 - replaced by World Famous Marriot Marquis Resort but never completed due to zoning changes which kept it within Sunway Village limits until 1957 when it was razed following complaints from residents about nightlife being serviced at rival hotels adjacent to Interstate 95 leading to a campaign started by civic boosters led by future University of Miami president Dr. James Baldwin against ever developing beyond Sunway Village limits; original Magnolia Cemetery off SW 7th Ave., south of US 90A Rd., became Park View Cemetery after annexation into North Lauderdale in 1953 following protests led by local pastor Rev. Caryl Cooke against allowing developers build mausoleums next to churches while nearly every other property within Sunway Village boundaries remained undeveloped or underutilized until former City Manager Donnie McClendon allowed Resurrection Cemetery adjoining Park View Cemetery to be developed into a mixed use stadium/sports complex called University Park while failing to include any mention of church services inside the complex or provide any compensation or restitution for properties destroyed since McClendon took office less than two years earlier

In recent years, though, North Lauderdale has seen strong revitalization efforts spearheaded by Mayor Gayle King and her team; this effort includes new development such as an apartment complex that opened in 2016 called Park Place South and a new theater district announced in February 2018 which will include four theaters including one that seats 4500 spectators capacity. One of the most famous residents of North Lauderdale is movie star James Dean who spent time here during filming of "A Streetcar Named Desire" (1951). Other notable residents include cartoonist Will Eisner and author Robert Crais
The town of North Lauderdale was founded in 1854 by surveyors from Tampa. The name is derived from the riverine plain to the east and south, which included much of what is now Broward County. The area had been pre-occupied by Native Americans for centuries and was first inhabited by the Timucua people. In 1666, a group of Spanish missionaries established a mission in what is now North Lauderdale after landing on Florida's Coastalis Peninsula.
