Niceville is a city in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 20,635 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Niceville is located on U.S. Route 1 and State Road 892 northwest of Orlando and east-southeast of Sanford. In 1887, a group of businessmen from Melbourne started to develop what would become Niceville as a new farming community with small businesses growing grapes and sugar beets before becoming an important bedroom community for Orlando during the 1920s and 1930s. Niceville is a city in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 24,090 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Broward County and home to Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport. Niceville was established in 1911 as a small town on US 1 between Hollywood and Miami Beach. The name "Niceville" comes from Spanish for "peaceful haven." In 1923, developer Harry Jaffa bought land east of Niceville and built what would become one of the most important hotels in South Florida – the Fox Club. In 1925, he sold the hotel to Nicknamed Properties Inc., which renamed it the Diplomat Hotel. In 1928, it became known as Chateau Marmont with an addition of two stories on top that included a movie theater and luxury suites for guests. In 1941, after World War II ended, America's first private airport opened – Wellesley Hills Airport (now Palm Beach International Airport). With its large hangar space, Wellesley Hills allowed larger airlines such as Eastern Airlines and American Airways to offer flights to Miami-Dade County without having to go through Fort Lauderdale or Tampa Bay. This helped spur development around the airport including Niceville proper which began growing rapidly during this time period. The Diplomat Hotel closed in 1984 but has since been renovated into several high-end hotels including The Ritz-Carlton Coral Gables Resort & Spa and The Embassy Suites by Hilton Westchester Village Garden City/New Hyde Park/Westchester Plaza hotel (). A new shopping center adjacent to Interstate 95 has also been developed with many stores being anchored by Macy's®, Sears®, JC Penney®, Abercrombie & Fitch® and other major retailers like Sears Holdings Corporation (SHLX) . A branch of banks First National Bank had its initial headquarters near Post Office Square before moving across I-95 towards Enterprise Road where it currently stands today just south of Starbucks Coffee House; this building served as their original corporate Headquarters until they moved back into their current building located on NE 2nd Street across from Safeway store prior to becoming part of JPMorgan Chase bank . The town of Niceville was founded in 1892 by J.F.M. Dent and his wife, Lizzie Dent. The town was named for General John Fenton who had given them a land grant in 1875. The Dents built the first post office, which they called "Natchez." The name changed to "Niceville" in 1903 due to the annexation of nearby Pensacola by Florida Territory.
