The history of Niceville goes back to 1892 when George Nice and his sister Fannie founded the town on a tract of land that they purchased from John Pritchard for $1 million dollars. At that time, there were only 75 people living in Niceville and within five years it had grown to 1,500 people with three stores and six businesses including one that became the first post office in town (on May 5th). The growth of niceville came about because early settlers believed that this area would be a great place to settle because it offered good soil conditions for crops as well as access to lumber resources which helped build many of today's homes in town - including some still standing today! In 1957, when Post Office No. 1 opened in niceville - just across Main Street from where we now stand - things really started piling up for the small community! Businesses kept opening up thanks to our growing population and an ever-growing demand for goods and services! In 1984 our last business closed its doors after more than seventy years serving residents hereabouts! Today, we continue to celebrate all that has made niceVILLE such an important part of Florida history – from our rich culture and heritage dating back centuries to our continuing need for quality retail space; we're excited about what lies ahead for our community as we strive towards becoming one of Jacksonville's top destinations!
Niceville was founded in 1875 by J.W. Goodyear, who named it for his native town of Nice, France. In 1907, the city was renamed for General Douglas MacArthur and it has since been home to many high-ranking military and political figures. The MacArthur family still lives in the city today.
