Niceville was founded in 1892 by J.M. Nice and W.H. Brown, two Britons who came to the United States to start a mercantile business. The town became a popular tourist destination for Americans seeking the laid-back lifestyle of England and Wales. In 1926, the town annexed what is today known as Jacksonville Beach; this move increased its population by 30%. By World War II, Niceville had become one of Florida's most rapidly developing communities with its large naval base and manufacturing plants serving the Orlando area and Gulf Coast states. After the war, Niceville grew steadily as it became home to many college students and professionals moving into new jobs in nearby Orlando or Tampa Bay. By 1990, however, there were only around 150 people living in Niceville – down from 1,500 when it was incorporated – as a result of economic stagnation due to heavy competition from other towns in Central Florida that had similar demographics and opportunities for growth. With no local industry left standing to support the community, efforts began to revive Niceville through redevelopment projects such as an $8 million job training center which opened in 2003; plans also exist for a new downtown district which would include shops, restaurants, offices and more housing options on high-traffic streets near Interstate 4E exit 213 (the old main road leading into downtown). Despite these efforts though, progress has been slow due to lack of resources and interest from developers interested in making use of what remains of the once thriving community.
