In 1864, when Florida became an official U.S. state, Niceville was made its capital and served as the county seat until 1919 when it moved to Sanford. By 1907, the population had grown to 2,000 people and by 1912 it had reached 3,500 people. There were several shops and a post office in Niceville until 1946 when it closed due to budget cuts by the United States Post Office Department. The last resident of Niceville died on December 15th, 1988. Niceville started as a small town in Leon County, Florida, in 1892. It was named for the French city of Nice. The first post office in Niceville was established in 1896. In 1912, the town became a city and was renamed Niceville-Ft Myers. The population of Niceville reached 100,000 by 1960.
